Whether it is the co-ruler of Wonderland or the card suit, a queen of hearts costume is a great way to emulate an iconic character. When creating your costume, it is important to make it simple. You can customise it as you like because there are no limitations to creativity.

Things you will need

You will need staples, gold metallic spray paint, red felt, craft glue, scissors, tape measure, stapler, plastic cup, bobby pins, computer paper, wire headband, red high heels, and a base outfit.

Creating a base outfit

You should start by cutting out several hearts of different sizes out of your red felt. Once you have finished, attach the hearts to the base of your outfit – a short or long red dress, or a red skirt paired with a red blouse with craft glue. You can use a combination of black and red for the base outfit. Pair the short dress or skirt with tights featuring your heart-shaped motif. Now complete the look with a pair of red flats or high heels.

Card collar

Start by measuring the circumference of your neck with a cloth tape measure. Now write down the measurements and create a collar template. This can be achieved by cutting a semi-circle the size of the wearer’s neck out of a piece of computer paper. Make sure the paper is in a landscape position when making the cuts. Now put the collar template to ensure it fits nicely around the neck.

Make your costume authentic like other costumes online by placing a few cards on top of each other, fanning them out like someone who is playing a game of cards. Now staple the cards together and do this using the collar template until you create a semi-circle the size of your neck or the neck of the wearer if you are making the costume for someone else.

Make another semi-circle but this time it should be larger. Make it by stapling your cards in the same way as before. The second semi-circle should go behind the first one to create a nice collar. Put the first semi-circle over the second semi-circle and cover about half of the second card. Now stable your semi-circles together.

Poke a tiny hole into the middle of your top collar with a knife and make a second tiny hole a few inches on the left side of the first hole. Create a third small hole just a few inches on the right side of the first hole. Put a bobby pin into the three holes and place the collar around your neck. Now, attach the bobby pins to your hair to ensure the colour remains up.

Creating the crown

Now it is time to create the crown of your queen of hearts costume. Cut the lip portion off your plastic cup and make the points of your crown by cutting M-like shapes from the top of the cup downwards. At the bottom of the plastic cup, cut two slits where the headband will slide through. Splay the cup crown with gold spray paint and allow it to dry before handling.
