Steps To Slice in Cricut Design Space
Slice is very easy to use in Cricut Design Space, but there are some rules to use the Slice in Cricut Design Space you’ll need to follow given below.
Rules:
- You can work with 2 layers at a time. If you choose more than 2 layers, the Slice button will be grayed out.
- Slice will not work on a grouped picture; you’ve to ungroup before Slice.
- The Slice does not work on multi-layered pictures. If the picture you want to slice has multiple layers, you’ll need to hide or ungroup the other layers before the slice tool can work.
- The hidden layers will disappear after slicing. Ensure to unwrap all the layers you want to save before slicing.
- The slice tool only works on overlapping pictures. If your pictures are not stacked on each other, nothing will happen when you slice them.
- Slicing text is slightly different and doesn’t necessarily follow the previous rules. You can slice multi-layered text, and the hidden shadow layer will not disappear automatically.

You need a Cricut Design Space to use the slice tool, but without a Cricut machine, you won’t be able to cut your sliced design.

In order to slice in Cricut Design Space, kindly follow the steps mentioned below:
Step 1: Add Two Single-Layer Images To the Canvas
First, we’re going to add two images to the canvas. These must be single-layered images. You can only slice two images at once. The single-layer image will be of one color. Also, you can see in the Layers panel on the right side of the canvas that there’s only one layer for each design. Here is an example of a layered image:
See how many colors are in this design? In Cricut Design Space, this means having multiple layers. Also, in the Layers panel, the colors are divided into separate layers, so this design has 4 layers.
Note: If you welded the image together (weld is another tool in the Cricut Design Space) and made it a single layer, you can slice it with the second image. You need images to be single-layered images to slice.
Alright, let’s move on! As you can see on the canvas, we’ve added a heart and star to it. We found these by tapping on “Shapes,” where you can also see the arrow points (in the 1st image). You can also search for photos by clicking on “Images” in the same panel and searching through all the images.
Step 2: Overlap Images
Now we are going to stack two images on top of each other. We placed the star at the top of the circle in the center. You can put images anywhere—only place them where you want to cut them.
Step 3: Highlight Both Images
Next, highlight both images! You can tap and drag to highlight both images. You can still tap them once while holding down the command on Mac or Shift on Windows. A box will be visible around both images, and the separate layers will be highlighted in the Layers panel. Once the 2 layers are chosen, Slice will be activated.
If you’re on a mobile or tablet, choose both images by clicking on your screen and dragging the selection box around both layers. Then click on the Action button at the bottom of your screen to see if the Slice option is available.
Step 4: Click on Slice
Now we slice! With both images selected, tap on Slice in the lower right corner.
Step 5: Show your work!
Once you click the slice button, it’ll look like nothing has happened. But, start pulling the star away, and you will see that there are currently two stars (one for each layer *it only occurs on a PC) and a heart with a cut-out star. Also, you can see your 3 layers in the Layers panel. You can either hide or remove the stars.
