If you are pursuing a career as a freelance copywriter, you must already know these things about yourself:

1) You are an exceptional writer

You can write on a wide range of topics with distinct tones to target the desired audience.

2) You are a good listener

You can listen to what the client wants, visions, and desired outcomes and bring it all to life.

3) You love creating for others

Even though there is room for individual creativity, the copywriters' focus is always on their clients.

Whatever the vocation, there is never a one way and specific starting point that suits all – you will have to start according to your own frame of possibilities.

Of course, there are basic principles to consider, however. You must first know why you are seeking the freelance copywriting field, what you want out of it, and what you will bring to it. And then:

• Know the basics of copywriting

Grammar matters alright, but one of the fundamental principles is understanding the human mind, emotions, and behavior to best hook the audience.

• Know what role you play in the field

Inquire and understand why companies and brands seek a copywriter. It gives you a detailed perspective on what and who you are marketing your work to and provides you with a rough idea of what your tasks will entail.

• Know your niche – or at least the kind of brands you want to work with

When you focus on what you know, it forms a trust and solid foundation of what you're able to offer – and to whom. If you cherish cooking, then focus on targeting and building a clientele of food brands.

• Get solid on how you seek to market yourself

How you market yourself could be just the right landing page for potential clients to see your skills as a copywriter with your choice of words, attracting images, and persuasiveness. Advertisement could come in handy here, but it is not the only way – you could also reach a wide range of clients through word of mouth.

• Create a portfolio that best showcases your skills

If you've got experience, why not showcase your work via a well-crafted portfolio? And if you have zero experience, this is a significant opportunity to showcase your creativity and imagination by creating one or two samples to offer potential clients. There you have it – you do not have to be better than anyone else, but you must love and be committed to your craft.
