Can You Take Electric Scooters on Airplanes?
One of the biggest questions you probably have is whether you can take escooters on airplanes. The answer is, unfortunately, a bit more complicated than a simple yes or no. There are rules and regulations for electrical devices, including electric scooters. The general rule of thumb is that recreational scooters are not allowed on planes, in part due to the batteries. However, each airline has its own rules, so it’s worth looking up specific rules.
What Are the Battery Rules?
As mentioned, the big concern airlines have is the scooter’s battery. There is always a risk it can spontaneously overheat and catch fire or explode. For international flights, batteries are divided into three categories.
Batteries with 100 Watt-hours or less are “small” with little fire risk. These are smartphones, cameras, and laptops. Up to 160 Watt-hours require permission from the airline to fly. Unfortunately, any electric scooter with this level of battery is probably meant for kids. Batteries over 160 Watt-hours are not allowed on flights. A typical commuter electric scooter has a 250-watt-hour battery.
Trains, Ferries, Buses, and Subways
You probably weren’t thinking about taking your scooter on trips when you were initially looking for electric scooters for sale. After all, you probably just wanted it for a commute around your hometown. But now that we know airplanes are out of the picture, what are your other options?
Some trains will let you bring your electric scooter during off-peak times, but other train companies won’t allow them at all. Double-check with the company first.
You’re in luck if you need to take a ferry, such as in Seattle. Most ferries let you take your electric scooter with you on off-peak times. Check during busy hours if you are allowed, however.
If you need to travel across town and regularly ride the bus, you might be able to bring your e-scooter along for the ride for the final mile to your destination. The best electric scooters are highly portable, so you can easily fold them and carry them onto the bus with you. To be on the safe side, make sure to check the bus company or city’s rules to ensure your scooter is allowed, but it’s generally okay.
Finally, most subways are fine with electric scooters as long as you don’t take up too much space and block other passengers. Taking your scooter with you during rush hour can be tricky because of this.
