Thatโ€™s the prevailing sentiment around recruiters. And I get it. But what if they could save you time and money and make your life easier. No really. Read onโ€ฆย

Now, I get why this is. Recruiters have a bad reputation. When I was asked to join the industry in 1994 I think my reply was, โ€œAnd be one step above used car salesman? I donโ€™t think so!โ€

Many deserve this reputation by the way. Many recruiters are transactional paper pushers and you should only deal with them if they happen to stumble across a candidate who is worth interviewing.ย

These recruiters deserve your scorn and many times they donโ€™t deserve full fee.ย

They didnโ€™t work for the placement. They got lucky.

Unfortunately, if you treat all recruiters like this YOU are the one who pays.

Think about it. You decide to partner with a recruiter. Whatโ€™s the first thing youโ€™re interested in? Probably their fee percentage and if they are willing to negotiate.ย

And this is the fundamental flaw. Hereโ€™s whyโ€ฆ

Put yourself in their shoes for a moment.

You are a recruiter with 5 clients interested in a particular type of candidate (in this market the number is probably closer to 10 โ€“ 20 clients).ย

You find aย candidateย that is truly exceptional.

Youโ€™re not paid for the hours you put in getting to know the market,ย developing relationships with candidatesย and getting to know your clients.ย

Youโ€™re only paid when you make a successful placement.

All things being equal, who are you going to show this candidate to?ย

Typically, unless you have an ongoing relationship or an agreement for volume business, you show this candidate to the client who pays the most.ย

Itโ€™s human nature.ย

Now letโ€™s turn this on its head.ย

What if you could develop a relationship with a recruiter where they act as a trusted advisor? They take the time to get to know your business and exactly what you look for. They only show you candidates that they truly think would be a good fit for your organization and work with you to find the best fit in the market โ€“ even when youโ€™re looking for a unicorn.

You trust them because they ALWAYS tell you the truth.ย

They never try to poach your staff and they are a huge resource for you.

You donโ€™t use them for every role but they come through for the ones you do give them.

What would that be worth to you?

Iโ€™m guessing a lot.ย

And Iโ€™ve written a white paper to help you develop just such a relationship. Hit me up in the comments or dm me if youโ€™re interested in reading it.
