William “Bill” Allen transforms lessons from heart disease, cancer, caregiving, and rehabilitation into a practical framework for givers and recipients of support.

In Igniting Wellness: Get Well, Be Well, Stay Well, author William “Bill” Allen introduces the Wellness Delta, a reflection tool designed to help people identify which actions, relationships, habits, and forms of support have the greatest impact during illness, injury, recovery, and wellness.

The concept emerged from Allen’s own health journey. After surviving a heart attack, living with heart failure, undergoing aggressive treatment for head and neck cancer, and later facing cardiac emergencies, Allen began looking back at the people and experiences that helped him continue moving forward. He had saved get-well cards, messages, memories of conversations, acts of advocacy, practical assistance, and moments of encouragement. Over time, he recognized that not every interaction affected him in the same way.

The Wellness Delta gives that observation a structure.

Using a one-to-five scale, readers are encouraged to rate the impact of experiences. A score of one represents little or no impact, while a score of five represents something extremely impactful or transformative. Allen’s goal is not to turn healing into a mathematical formula but to encourage awareness of what genuinely helps.

For the giver, the Wellness Delta asks readers to consider whether they understand the other person’s situation, provide authentic and intentional support, communicate thoughtfully, review and adjust their approach, expand their circle of support, reflect on how helping affects them personally, and recognize other forms of assistance they provide.

For the recipient, the framework examines areas such as understanding the health situation, keeping a journal, seeking multiple perspectives, building a support network, engaging with the care team, verifying information, supporting emotional health, maintaining healthy habits, identifying an appropriate diet, and recognizing both successes and challenges.

“Sharing, giving, and wishing wellness to others provides multidimensional benefits for both you, the giver, and the recipient,” Allen writes.

That reciprocity is central to Igniting Wellness. Allen repeatedly returns to the idea that people do not experience illness in a vacuum. Medical professionals provide diagnosis, treatment, procedures, medication, and clinical expertise, while family members, friends, colleagues, caregivers, and others can affect how supported, informed, motivated, and connected a person feels.

Allen describes that human contribution as “instinctive humanity.”

The book also draws on Allen’s professional background in vocational rehabilitation. For more than three decades, he worked with the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission, now MassAbility, supporting employment, business relationships, and opportunities for people with disabilities. His career taught him to think in terms of progress, change, independence, and measurable outcomes. The Wellness Delta adapts that instinct for measurement to a simple question: what changed because someone showed up?

Allen says his own Wellness Delta ranged from approximately 10 during his lowest periods to 50 at its highest. For him, the number became a way to recognize the cumulative effect of support rather than a medical measure of disease or recovery.

Igniting Wellness also includes stories of people who embody Allen’s philosophy, including Margaret “MAD Maggie” Duquette, whose generosity and connections influenced his recovery, and Lorenzo T. Brown, whose story of paralysis, forgiveness, purpose, and service demonstrates another path toward meaning after trauma.
