A small electronic device connected to the heart is known as an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD). It is used to continuously monitor and help regulate potentially fatal electrical problems with the heart.

A transvenous or “traditional” ICD, about the size of a stopwatch, is implanted just below the collarbone under the skin. It is made up of a pulse generator and wires known as leads. The pulse generator houses the battery as well as a small computer. The Implantable Cardiac Pacemaker is connected to the heart via one or more lead wires.
