Is a Puppy a Good Christmas Gift?

We're going, to be honest with you: puppies are great!

They're fun, they're adorable, and they're a great gift. But the thing is, if you get a puppy for Christmas—even if it's just for the holidays—you need to be prepared to take on the responsibility of caring for that puppy long-term.

If you're thinking about getting a puppy for your family this year, here are some things to consider:

  • Do you have the time and resources to care for a puppy? Puppies need lots of attention and training, so if you don't have the time or money to commit to training your new dog and taking it on walks every day, it might not be the best choice for your family right now.
  • Do all members of your family agree on getting a puppy? If there's even one person who's opposed to bringing home a new furry friend this year, it might not be worth it (and could cause tension between everyone involved).
  • Will the puppy be staying outside most of the time? If the answer is yes—and especially if you live in an apartment or condo building—you should seriously reconsider getting a pet this year because pets left outside can easily get cold, injured, or stolen.
