  • To develop your debating, negotiation, public speaking, and social skills.
  • To give yourself a huge confidence boost.

Let’s break down each of these.

To get an in-depth understanding of how MUNs and the real UN operate:

It’s a fair and understandable thing that first-timers to Model United Nations may be nervous about speaking or may not want to. However, it is important to remember that the aim of the Model United Nations is to understand how the UN operates, and the best way to do this is by fully participating in MUN by speaking. It is also the best way to quickly understand the proceedings, and then be better able to fully participate in the Model UN.

To challenge and test your views and points.

Another reason you should definitely speak at MUN is that it will allow you to learn thoroughly about the country you’re representing, which will help you further in debates. It will enable you to put your understanding of your delegate country and arguments for its foreign policy to the test by laying out your points and allowing other delegates to challenge them. This may sound intimidating at first, but when you successfully make a strong comeback to another delegate’s points, it will give your confidence a huge boost!

To develop your debating, negotiation, public speaking, and social skills:

Attending a Model UN is most beneficial when you are fully participating, and speaking is a crucial part of this.  Also, it’s important that you seek to influence alongside speaking in committee. It will greatly enhance your public speaking skills and boost your confidence.

Lobbying is a key part of MUN as it helps you develop strong negotiation, social and interpersonal skills. All these skills can be vital for a career in the real United Nations.

To give yourself a huge confidence boost:

Most new delegates feel shy or intimidated when it comes to public speaking. This is completely fair and natural considering they’re surrounded by more experienced people.
