Is Myotherapy Effective Or Just A Placebo?

Myotherapy Fitzroy was developed by Bonnie Prudden, an American, in the 1970s to treat painful and dysfunctional muscles and soft tissue.

The term is also used to describe a wide range of soft tissue and massage methods.

Myotherapists are experts in treating myofascial pain.

Pain that emerges from locations inside muscles and ligaments that are both painful on their own and capable of causing referred pain in predictable ways was defined by Janet Travell and David Simons.

Simons was a pioneer of stratospheric flight and the first man to view the planet's curvature from the edge of space. At the same time, Travell was recognized for being JFK's physician.

Their Trigger Point Manual has become a common reference for doctors interested in myofascial pain.

In the early 1970s, Bonnie Prudden, a pioneer in promoting public physical fitness, became interested in Travell and Simons' work.

She published her book Pain Erasure in 1980 and spent the rest of her life teaching and expanding myotherapy.

Evidence And Methods

In medicine, myofascial pain and trigger points are still a hot topic.

Few practitioners who treat many patients with musculoskeletal pain would deny that painful areas exist at the places listed in the Trigger Point Manual.

I was able to help sort out dozens of patients suggested by colleagues with otherwise unexplainable pain by applying the general ideas of Travell and Simons to dozens of patients recommended by colleagues with otherwise inexplicable pain.

However, nearly half a century after the terms trigger points and myofascial pain was coined, scientific understanding of the two and the best strategies to treat the latter remain vague.

This is due to the poor progress of basic scientific studies into muscle and soft tissue pain.

Massage concentrated pressure from hands, fingers, knuckles, or elbows, and modalities such as heat, cold, electrical stimulation, and inserting acupuncture needles into trigger areas are all taught to myotherapists.

They also provide posture counseling and exercise programs to rectify the biomechanical abnormalities that cause trigger points to arise in the first place. Myotherapists employ manual therapies to relieve tissue and muscle soreness. Some of the therapies in the arsenal of Myotherapy Fitzroy are scientifically proven.

Trigger-point injections with a local anesthetic, dry needling, and even botulinum toxin have all offered short- to medium-term advantages.

In my perspective, given the charismatic individuals involved in its inception and the lack of follow-up studies to establish an empirical grounding, myotherapy, in general, has a cult-like feel to it.

Outside of myofascial treatment, myotherapy is founded on realistic notions and does not tend to make promises of effectiveness. Seeing a myotherapist for muscular discomfort could be effective if your pain is caused by trigger points and responds to manual treatment.

It is prudent to choose a therapist who is a member of the IRMA, which represents about 500 therapists, or the Australian Association of Massage Therapists, which requires members to have indemnity insurance and participate in ongoing professional development.
