When you think about coffee as a coffee lover, what is the first thought that comes to your mind? Nothing can beat the refreshing feeling in the morning as you sip your favourite hot coffee. Coffee comes in different varieties as there are types of coffee plants. The most popular species of coffee are Arabica and Robusta. You may know about varieties but not about a coffee varietal. There are some terms like variety and varietal that are used interchangeably in this article. So, it is necessary for you to get used to these terms. In this article, you will get a complete picture of coffee varietals.

What are coffee varietals?

A coffee varietal is a product of a variety. Just like there are types of mangoes there are types of coffee plants.  And there are several thousands of coffee varietals found around the world. The primary coffee varietals are:

These different varieties have basic attributes like acidity, bitterness or sweetness, finish or aftertaste, as well as different quantities of caffeine.

Arabica and Robusta

The two main coffee bean types are Arabica and Robusta. The Arabica species have lower caffeine contents. Arabica is primarily used among specialty coffee roasters. They are distinct, complex, and have delicate flavour notes. Arabica has superior taste and quality compared to Robusta which has a bitter taste. Consumers generally look for higher-quality coffee beans with attributes like lesser caffeine levels and delicate flavour notes. Arabica is their first choice. Few consumers may use the term “gourmet coffee”, which is crafted from 100% Arabica beans.

Other Common Varietals

Typica

This varietal is developed either through genetic mutation or cross-breeding. The coffee plant produces elongated oval-shaped beans. Coffee from this varietal has remarkable sweetness and complexity. The yield is low when compared to other varietals.

Bourbon

Bourbon is a mutation of early Arabica species from Ethiopia. When compared to Typica varietal this varietal relatively yields low. The leaves of Bourbon are broad and cherries can ripen red, yellow, or orange. The basic characteristics include complex acidity and amazing balance.

Geisha

This is the most reputed varietal among specialty coffee roasters. And the exciting part of Geisha coffee is that it has a great taste profile because of its history rooted in Ethiopia. And it always renders a mystical feeling. Though it is low yielding, it produces an amazing cup profile with unique floral aromatics.

Popular Indian Coffee Varieties

Kent

Named after an English planter Mr. L.P. Kent, it belongs to the Typica family. The main attributes of Kent include a fruity flavour profile, spicy notes, and a sharp acidity. The coffee beans are well known for good cup quality.

Catimor

This variety is a hybrid of Arabica and Robusta. It is a cross between Caturra and Hybrido-de-Timor. Well known as Cauvery, it renders high yield and is cultivated in low-lying regions. Catimor has a similar flavour profile to Bourbon. It has a sweet aftertaste.
