There are many who are happy to claim that  ITIL  , the best practice framework of popular  IT service management (ITSM) , is dead, or at least dying. However, interest in the latest version of ITIL seems to show little sign of abating, at least with people who have studied, rated and adopted ITIL best practices in the last 30 years (yes, ITIL turns 30 this year) . If you want to learn more about this new version of ITIL, in this post we share the most important information about what we should all expect until the end of February 2019.

Why is ITIL being updated?

Stuart Rance  , a longtime ITIL author and ITSM industry authority, lists five key reasons why ITIL v3 required an update:

(ITIL v3 has) too much focus on process

Implementation in silos (with organizations that operate each of the processes separately).

Very little focus on value, results, costs, and risks

(Provides) support for digital transformation.

(For) compatibility with Agile, Lean, DevOps and other management approaches

Since Stuart has authored the latest ITIL update, it can be assumed that these reasons not only reflect what is wrong with ITIL v3 but also what will change with ITIL 4. The update is likely to reinforce the links to the strategy commercial and be maintained. the core elements (from previous versions of ITIL) that are still valuable, as well as offering guidance on the areas you mention on your blog.

The new ITIL 4 qualifications

AXELOS has shared the following ITIL 4 certification structure diagram, showing the ITIL 4 courses and certifications at the following levels:

ITIL Foundation

ITIL Specialist modules x3

ITIL Strategist

ITIL Leader

ITIL Master

The Foundation course continues to be the platform on which to build towards other ITIL qualifications. Interestingly, there is no longer an ITIL Practitioner course and qualification available.

ITIL V certification

With the associated explanation that, in addition to TIL Foundation and ITIL Master , the ITIL 4 certification scheme contains:

ITIL Managing Professional (ITIL MP)  , aimed at IT professionals who work in digital and technology teams. Provides practical and technical knowledge.

ITIL Strategic Leader (ITIL SL)  , which positions ITIL not only for IT operations but for all digitally enabled services.

To qualify as an ITIL Managing Professional  or  ITIL Strategic Leader , the person taking the exam must complete all modules in each flow.

How will the ITIL 4 update affect existing ITIL qualification holders?

This is one of the most frequently asked questions every time ITIL is updated. Why? Because with every ITIL update comes new content, new qualifications, and new exams, often including “bridge exams” that take people from an older version of ITIL (qualification) to the newer one.

For example, someone with the ITIL Foundation v3 certification , might want to acquire the I TIL Foundation 4 certification to continue studying for more ITIL certificates. The AXELOS ITIL upgrade blog explains the mechanics:

All ITIL certifications will remain valid after upgrade.

All credits obtained can be transferred to the new certification scheme. AXELOS recommends that candidates continue to collect the 17 ITIL v3 credits required to take the ITIL Managing Professional Transition module ( one course, one exam).

AXELOS also provides more detailed advice for people with ITIL v3 certifications who want to move up to ITIL 4 qualifications:

ITIL v3 Foundation – It is recommended that certification holders complete the ITIL 4 Foundation for the transition to the new scheme.

ITIL v3 Intermediate (3 or 4 credits earned) – There are two recommended options for individuals at this scoring point. Are encouraged to:

Take  ITIL 4 Foundation and an additional module in your preferred area of interest.

Earn 17 ITIL v3 credits to be eligible for the ITIL Managing Professional transition module .

ITIL Intermediate / Practitioner (6 or more credits earned beyond Foundation ) – Continue to collect v3 credits for an easy transition to ITIL 4 and the ITIL Administrative Professional qualification. 17 credits are required to take the ITIL Managing Professional Transition module.

ITIL v3 Expert – Take the  ITIL Managing Professional Transition module  to earn the ITIL Managing Professional qualification.

If this all sounds like a mix of terminology related to ITIL qualification, this  flowchart  might be a more useful way to understand the impact of ITIL 4 on your ITIL v3 qualifications.

If you are looking to invest in a new ITSM tool, then you can use  Pink Elephant's PinkVERIFY tool certification scheme, described  by Pink Elephant as “an internationally recognized ITSM tool suite assessment service.”

The currently available set of evaluations for the Pink Elephant tool is called  PinkVERIFY 2011 Toolsets  . This will certainly need to be updated to reflect not only the new name of ITIL 4, but also any changes to the structure and scope of ITIL that the update brings. But, so far, there has been no announcement from Pink Elephant about what will happen.

I hope this blog has been useful to explain more about ITIL 4. If you have any questions, please reach out to HIXSA's specialized consultants, or request a no-cost, no-obligation demo today on Cherwell , we will help you in any way we can .

Oh and remember, it's ITIL 4, not ITIL v4!
