The Aquaman actor has recently spoken to InStyle about his personal struggles after his character Khal Drogo was killed off at the end of Game of Thrones Season 1. Khal Drogo was the leader of the Dothraki horsemen and had married Daenerys Targaryen at the beginning of the season.
Jason Momoa had a turbulent few years after his time at the sets of Game of Thrones. The actor has recently spoken about it in his honest interview with InStyle, which was published on November 10th Tuesday.
In the interview, the 41-year-old actor became honest about his problematic personal and professional life after his stint in the hugely popular show Game of Thrones. He revealed to InStyle that he was in such financial mess following the end of Game of Thrones Season 1 that he was reeling to pay the bills of his Los Angeles apartment that he still shares with his spouse (Lisa Bonet) and the two children. His daughter Lola is 13 now, while his son Nakoa-Wolf is 11.
While Emilia Clarke and the company became global icons after season 1, Jason Momoa’s Khal Drogo became a forgotten character, and he and his family did struggle for some time because of his unemployment.
“I mean, we were starving after Game of Thrones,” he said in the interview. He added that the challenging part was to feed his children, and he was failing to do it because he was unable to get any work. We all know it’s a different thing being a poor man alone and being a poor man with a family.
Momoa explained that his money-related worries had started during the filming of Game of Thrones itself as there was a time during the filming break where he had no money to fly back home, so he had to rent a van with his friend. Being an eternal fun-loving person, he used the van to travel around the vast landscapes of Ireland in search of the “greatest pint of Guinness.”
Momoa explained in the interview that things remained very bleak for him up until the time he bagged the role of Aquaman in Zack Snyder’s Batman Vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice. He then went on to star in the 2018 film Aquaman which grossed over $1billion (highest grossing DCEU film) at the box office. Of course, he had also done the Justice League before that, but the film had failed to impress both financially and critically.
Apart from the film Aquaman, he has also given his voice to the mystic superhero in the 2019 film The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.
Now, Jason Momoa is well past his troubles and is a happy man. Recently, he was seen in the Dune trailer, which came out in September. He also addressed the Dune trailer in the interview and said that he felt profoundly honored to be a part of the cast that includes names like Javier Bardem and Josh Brolin.
He also talked about his experiences of being a father. He admitted that at first, he was quite inexperienced as a dad because he had grown up in a family where he had no dad. He added that he does not want to be a strict parent to his son but rather wants to connect with him on a deeper level.
He took a moment in the interview to stress the fact that we all should be vulnerable and open sometimes. He gave the example of himself and said that he is someone who is not less than a warrior, but when the time comes, he is the first one to raise his hand and admit that he has some problems which he needs to correct.
