5. The Tavern
This historic building, erected in 1779, is one of the oldest west of the Blue Ridge. It was built as a bar and stagecoach stop for passengers. Henry Clay, King Louis Philippe of France, Andrew Jackson, and Pierre Charles L'Enfant, designer of Washington D.C. The Tavern's east wing housed the first post office on the western Blue Ridge Mountains. The original postal slot is still visible from the street.
A pub for two centuries, The Tavern has also been a bank and a general store, as well as a private dwelling and a post office. During the Civil War, it housed wounded Confederate and Union soldiers. The Tavern also has one of the oldest bars in Virginia and one of the oldest in the country.
Mary Dudley Porterfield, founder of the Barter Theatre, bought The Tavern from the Thaddeus Harris family in 1965. Owners of The Tavern for over a century. Local attorney Emmitt F. Yeary refurbished The Tavern in 1984.
