Borat 2 is a mockumentary film directed by Jason Woliner and starring Sacha Baron Cohen as a Kazakh journalist. Maria Bakalova played the character of his 15-years-old daughter, Tutar. The plot of the film follows a father-daughter character and revolves around the 2020 presidential election of America. The film is a sequel to the 2006 movie titled Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan.
The film was released on 23 October 2020 on Amazon Prime Video. Borat 2 received praise from critics for its commentary on the American culture and the performance of Cohen and Bakalova.
The casting team auditioned around 600 actresses before finalizing Bakalova for the role of Tutar. The actress sent her acting tape to an unnamed Hollywood movie, which she initially skeptical about that it might be a human trafficking scam. Still, she ends up rehearsing with Baron Cohen.
The team filmed a prank in 2019 involving an interview with Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller. However, the scenes did not appear in the film. Later in 2020, Cohen dressed like Donald Trump interrupted the Conservative Political Action Conference. The movie is filmed in secret throughout 2019 and 2020, even during the lockdown.
Maria Bakalova is a 24-year Bulgarian actress, and she gained fame from Borat 2 for playing Tutar Sagdiyev. She graduated from Krastyo Sarafov National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts in Sofia in 2019 and started her career with Bulgarian films, including 2018, Transgression, and 2020 Last Call. Bakalova has never done a movie of this scale before, and she has also never done improvisation or comedy. Her performance as a newcomer is praiseworthy as Borat’s teenage daughter. The actress improvises with Cohen adapting to an upcoming election and pandemic. The most impressive scene by her was the climactic interview with Rudy Giuliani.
In an interview with James Corden on The Late Late Show, Bakalova shared that her mom was sad after watching the movie. She said that her eyes were full of tears, and her mom might be crying for 2 hours. She is kind of a masochist; her mom watched the movie twice and was even sadder. She added that her mom has never seen anything like Tutar, and it is so sad.
Bakalova elaborates on her experience during the audition as she thought that the audition is a scam. She recorded the tape at 5 am after returning from her prom, and she and her friends were still drinking and smoking. She recalled her improvisation in the video by saying, “My daddy is the best daddy in the whole flat world because he gives me cigarettes and allows me to drink.”
There was so much secrecy around the film that Bakalova did not tell her parents that she was filming. Perhaps this is why her mother watched the movie twice to see her daughter’s fantastic performance of the character of Tutar and endearing the father-daughter duo.
The Bulgarian actress shared that she found a temporary family in the crew and the film’s cast when she was away from home during filming. Bakalova said the shooting of the Giuliani sequence was a nerve-wracking experience. Bakalova’s mom cried after watching the movie, and she appreciated her daughter’s ability to bring Tutar to life.
