The purpose of this review was to examine the patterns and ranges in maternal health services utilisation in Nepal during the past decade. It is based upon the 2001 and 2006 Nepal health surveys and literature from around the world that are related to the Nepalese context. There are many aspects to maternal health care. We reviewed the following aspects of maternal health care: antenatal care (ANC), birth care (PNC), delivery, skilled birth attendance(SBA), and family planning (FP). Results: Geographic location and socio-economic status have significant effects on the utilisation of maternal healthcare services. The uptake of maternal services is affected by several factors, including the woman's age and her education level, income, wealth, and employment. Rural/urban, ecological, and development region, and the number of children living in the household. It was found that women who live in the urban areas of Nepal and in central and western Nepal are more likely than other households to access maternal health services. Women with more than three children are less likely than other women to use maternal health services, except for family planning services. Conclusions: The government should prioritize women from lower socioeconomic groups in community interventions (e.g. Offering subsidies to help with partial financing community payments or pre-payment schemes, or insurance programs, private or public insurance, or schemes for insurance programmes, or private insurance. The government should prioritize the establishment of health facilities in remote areas and developing roads links to major cities of Nepal.
