Meghalaya is one of the safest places for women to travel. Crimes against women are rare in this matrilineal society. I have travelled solo in Meghalaya, in remote areas like Tura, without fear. Meghalaya is a state where I feel at home when travelling solo.
How do I Reach Meghalaya
Guwahati, just like other northeast states is also the entry point to Meghalaya. Shillong, the capital and most important city of Meghalaya is Shillong. Most likely, your Meghalaya group tour journey will start in Shillong.
There is a domestic airport in Shillong that can be connected to New Delhi, Kolkata and Guwahati. The best way to get into Meghalaya is to fly to Guwahati, then to Shillong.
Guwahati is the nearest railway station. Shared jeeps or cabs are available at Paltan Bazar, Guwahati Railway Station. Also, you can get shared jeeps or cabs from Khanapara (Guwahati). Buses can also be rented from the ASTC Bus Stand located outside the railway station. Regular buses can also be accessed from ISBT Beltola, Guwahati.
From Guwahati to Shillong, helicopter services are also available. We recommend that you take the road. Shillong, located 100 kilometres from Guwahati, is a scenic destination. It follows an uphill route through lush greenery.

For trips to different destinations within the city, buses and yellow taxis are readily available. For long-distance and local sightseeing, Shillong has tourist taxis.
The Police Bazar Stand houses the Main Taxi Stand. You can get yellow taxis that will take you to various destinations around the city from this stand. You can also use city buses to get around Shillong.
Police Bazar is home to the Meghalaya backpacking trip Tourism Office. There you can book sightseeing tours as well as city tours. You can also book tours to Cherrapunji and Mawlynong, Dawki, and other locations. The Tourism Office also offers car hire for trips around the country.
