MEMORIES OF YESTERYEARS
Not all things that shine are made of gold. Well, literally speaking, that is.
Family heirlooms that are handed down from generation to generation are not always of golden ornaments. Although, in most cases that seems to be the case. Clocks, wristwatches, antique furniture, saris are also regarded as heirlooms, given that these priceless items travel down generations by virtue of their value, which has more to do with memory than lucre.
Today we cannot think of stepping out of our homes without a smart phone in the pocket or handbag. We have become slaves to technology. Facebook and WhatsApp are giving us more trouble and toil than joy. Doctors are diagnosing patients with more and more symptoms of chronic shoulder problems that are more the outcome of browsing the Net over smart phones than for other causes.
Take a few steps back in time. Say, a decade ago? Smart phones were yet to make entries and we were content with the ones, the simple mobile kind, which kept people connected when on the move. This in itself was a novel concept. We had wondered at the innovativeness that technology had made affordable. The mobile phone was a contraption that had held all of us in thrall. But as we know, necessity is the mother of invention. We, mankind, are never content with what we have. We always crave for what we have not. This inner drive, to find newer ways of ling and improving on its standards, has lead man to greater discoveries.
When I bought my smartphone – a Samsung – that I have been having for the last six years and counting, I never realised how indispensable it would become in the long run in my day to day life. But that meant that I’d have to dispose off my older phone. But I was unwilling to part, read throw away, with a gadget that had stood by me through turbulent waters. Then what do I do with it? Surely I won’t require this older variety, now that the latest technological marvel has arrived in my clasp? I had decided. I was going to hand over my phone, a Nokia C3, to the man who had been delivering fresh fish at our doorsteps for the past few years. That was a deal hidden here. He would get a phone and I would remain connected with him through thick and thin.
Lo and behold!
When I offered him my hand set, with a big knowing grin spread all across my countenance, because I knew I was gifting him with a valuable (dear readers this was some years ago), he smiled back!
“Didi you will be glad to know that my son has presented me with a phone. Phoren make! I can see his face when he calls me. My son is not like me, didi. He works in an oil refinery.”
By ‘phoren make’he obviously meant that it was a smart phone. That much intelligence I can boast of, really!
I was happy for him. He was a genuine person who deserved to be rewarded.
“Even if your son has gifted you with a good phone, you will have to learn its usage. And that’ll take some time,” I did not want to used the phrase ‘if ever’ in front of his beaming face. “I want to give you my older phone for which I have absolutely no use for.”
I further added, “This phone does not show the face of the caller. But anyway, it would suffice your needs.”
Hence the ounce of the Good Samaritan in me had prompted me to gift my older mobile to a man who needed one. Instead of disposing it altogether in the gutter as utterly useless, I considered it fit to hand it over to a person who’d value it and keep it for immediate use. My #CleanUpCashOut attempt had indeed met with success, as was evident by the look of gratitude which I had received in return.
