“Persuasion Lookmvoie” In it, Anne finds herself entangled in an octopus's tentacles before discovering she is “eating my own face” and that the tentacles are hers. One wonders if Austen, who has a prominent position in the pantheon of great English authors, would have ever spoken such a remark.
Crediting this movie as an adaptation of Jane Austen's Persuasion is insulting because, aside from a few character and place names, the script by Ron Bass and Alice Victoria Winslow bears only a passing resemblance to the novel. What Netflix has produced is a candied reality program dressed in Regency attire—a version of Austen for the Bridgerton audience.
The main culprit in this parody is Dakota Johnson, who transforms Anne into a contemporary, melancholy bitch à la Fleabag. Her Anne swills red wine straight from the bottle, someway hears Beethoven in her bedroom, and uses Millennial-era language in a way that swiftly irritates.
Cosmo Jarvis is hardly the epitome of charisma in Her Wentworth's eyes. He is inferior to Henry Golding, Anne's cousin and secondary suitor, whose presence is as energizing as the sea breeze lapping Lyme Regis's coastline. He appears to be the only person working on the set who has really read any of Austen's works.
“Persuasion Moviesjoy” After a long career in theatre, director Carrie Cracknell is making her film debut. She appears perfectly content to allow her cast to move around either standing or sitting. While there are some lovely pictures of British beaches, it is unfortunate that Bath's architecture is not given greater attention in the closing moments of Persuasion. Not properly utilizing Austen's former hometown comes out as sloppy and indicative of a deeper problem with the text.
