If you’re an experienced ice skater but new to roller skating, you probably know the two are a little bit different. So, here are some tips to transition smoothly from figure skating to roller skating.

Inline or Quads?

This is the first important decision you would make when you decide to try roller skating. The quads’ center of gravity is a little different with quads and you should invest some time adjusting your balance on them. While quads offer more stability, especially for beginners, inline skates are faster and easier to operate for ice skaters.

Always, safety first

Even if you have many years of experience ice skating, you should know that falling on the sidewalk is different than falling on the ice. Invest in good quality skate protection gear. You should be wearing a well-fitted helmet, and pads to protect your wrists, knees, and elbows. Begin with roller skating on smooth surfaces like a rink to avoid bumps or obstacles that might make to fall.

Take it easy

Start slowly till you gain confidence. Like any other sport, don’t jump head first into it, trying to master the hardest tricks. It has the potential to injure you. Get used to the different posture, balance and feel of roller skating.

You can begin with basic forward skating to find your balance. Once you’re confident in this skill, you could move on to skating turns and other skills. Master one trick at a time without increasing your speed. Once you have mastered entry-level skills, you can switch to the challenging moves. Basically, spend a lot of time on your skates, gradually gain confidence and keep learning.

The tricks

If you are yet to try them, jumps, spins, and other tricks can prove tricky on roller skates. However, your figure skating training will come in handy here, especially if you’re using inline skates. But take time to learn jumps and spins on roller skates. It can be a little different than the same move on the ice. If you are interested in artistic roller skating, quads may be better for you. Regardless of the choice of skate, begin by learning to find your balance.

Enjoy!

Don’t forget that roller skating is all about fun. In addition to the fun of skating itself, take time to meeting others interested in roller skating when you go to the skate park. Experienced skaters are more than happy to share tips and even if you don’t get it right away, have fun while you practice.
