Cats have this instinct to track and trace, and this will be a problem in case you move out of your old home and your cat has the urge to return to her old territory. To prevent your cat from being lost, it is a good idea to have her microchipped or have identification on her collar to increase the chances that you can retrieve her in case she gets lost.

Once you have finally settled into your new home. It is important to not let your cat go outside for about 2-3 weeks. This is to allow them to get used to your new home and make a new territory. Since cats can escape easily, make sure that your windows and doors are not open.

Another thing that can help, is keeping your cat's routine as normal as possible. The sudden change in surroundings and the people around her can affect your cat's behaviour. Keep her normal things as is and try not to wash them to retain the scent they are used to. This helps her feel that she is still in her old territory.

Make sure that your pet’s preventatives and vaccines are up to date before outdoor excursions. Call your animal hospital in Washington DC for information. Learn more here.
