A playlist can make a long drive more enjoyable, but using your phone to control music is something NSW learner and provisional drivers need to think about carefully.

It is easy to assume that music is different from other phone activities. After all, you may not be typing a message or browsing social media. Your phone could even be sitting safely out of sight while the sound plays through wireless earbuds.

The problem is that the mobile phone restrictions for L, P1 and P2 drivers also cover using a phone for music. Bluetooth does not automatically change the rules.

One practical solution is simple. Before leaving, choose your playlist and make sure your navigation is ready. Once you start driving, avoid reaching for the phone or using it through connected headphones.

This is also a good habit to build early. The less you interact with your phone behind the wheel, the easier it becomes to keep your attention where it belongs.

Curious about the rules around music, earbuds and hands-free connections? The full breakdown is worth reading before your next lesson or drive: https://onroad.com.au/Blog/L-and-P-Platers-Can-You-Use-Headphones-While-Driving
