Goals are an important part of a participant’s NDIS plan. The NDIS goals are all about focusing on the strengths of the participant and how they can use those to lead an independent life. Goals are also helpful in thinking about what the participants want their life to look like and encourage them to try new things. The NDIS ensures that participants have ‘choice and control’ over their NDIS plan at all times. Participants can decide how they want
to pursue their goals and at what pace they want to pursue them. It is up to the participants to decide whether they want to set up short-term goals or take on challenging goals.
Your NDIS Goals may include:
Wanting to pursue a job or higher education
Being more social and building relationships
Engaging in new hobbies or recreational activities
Working on yourself and becoming more independent.
Once the participants set their goals, the NDIS will provide the ‘reasonable and necessary’ supports that are required to pursue them. For example, there may be people with disabilities living in aged care and hostels who may have the goal of wanting to move out and living independently. The NDIS may fund supports like Specialist Disability Accommodation (SDA) or Supported Independent Living (SIL) in their NDIS plan which can drastically
improve their quality of life. It is important to remember that setting up more challenging goals does not mean that the NDIS will give more funding to achieve them.
