Two jackets can look meaningfully different without a person being able to say exactly why - and more often than not, the answer is the lapel. It's a small detail that carries a disproportionate amount of a jacket's personality.
Notch is the default for a reason: a visible notch where lapel meets collar, versatile enough to sit comfortably under one, two, or three buttons without ever looking out of place. It's the safe, foundational choice for a first suit or a workhorse business piece.
Peak lapels point upward toward the shoulder, adding visual width and a sharper, more assertive line. Historically reserved for double-breasted jackets and formalwear, peak has become common on single-breasted suits too - a deliberate choice for anyone who wants a bolder, more commanding read than notch provides.
Shawl collars skip the notch entirely, curving continuously from collar to button. This one belongs almost exclusively to tuxedos and formalwear; its presence on a jacket is itself a signal that the garment isn't meant for a standard business day.
Width matters as much as style. Wider lapels add visual bulk that flatters leaner builds; narrower lapels streamline a broader chest but can look thin on a leaner one. Unlike a hem or waist, lapel width generally can't be altered after construction - which makes it one of the clearer cases where designing to actual measurements at the outset matters more than most other details on the jacket.
Once you know the intended effect - safe and versatile, sharp and assertive, or formally old-Hollywood - the lapel choice mostly makes itself.
