Nothing is impossible for Dr. Pankaj Naram, world-renowned, from Mumbai, India. The current head of a 2000-year-old Ayurvedic lineage that originated with Lord Buddha's physician, this Ayurvedic pulse master learned all of his secrets while training intensely for years with his 125-year-old guru, Baba Ramdas Swami. Even old age can be overcome, according to this cheerful and optimistic man.

Dr. Pankaj Naram has treated more than 400,000 people at his Ayushakti healing center. He also trains Western doctors from around the world in Ayurvedic methods. He has received many humanitarian awards for his work. A particular specialty of his-marma chikitsa-is a little-known system of subtle energy points that transforms the body physically, emotionally and mentally. It works successfully with a wide range of modern diseases: diabetes, arthritis, immune system disorders, reproductive and fertility problems, ADD, depression and many more.

One night, during his last tour of the United States, a Spanish journalist interviewed Dr. Pankaj Naram in Manhattan. His answers were informative and enlightening on the many facets of Ayurveda and what it can offer the world:

Inteviewer: Could you describe the difference between modern medicine and the ancient science of ayurveda?

Dr. Pankaj Naram: Ayurveda is the ancient Indian art and the science of health, happiness and prosperity. It is at least 6,000 years old and has many distinctive features.

Ayurveda is a complete health system, so that is the first difference between this ancient science and modern medicine. Mainly, it treats the diseases of the body: serious and chronic conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, infertility, arthritis, psoriasis, cancer and HIV.

Second, it tells you how to stay young for 100 years. Through the practice of Ayurveda, I no longer need glasses, I grew my hair, I lost more than 40 pounds and now I am in good health. Then, ayurveda tells you how to eliminate the disease and how to feel and look younger for a prolonged period.

A third aspect of Ayurveda is the prevention of diseases. This whole health philosophy teaches you to stay in shape, to be aware of the focus of a disease and then, before it manifests as physical symptoms, how you can prevent the disease from developing.

I'll give you an example of this. Consider a person who is a vata type. Ayurveda identifies three basic types: vata, pitta and kapha. Vata means wind. Pitta means fire, and kapha means water.

If a person's vata is too high, then he will have a tendency to suffer from arthritis and osteoporosis. And if they do not make some changes in diet and lifestyle, they will definitely suffer those aggravated conditions. I have been observing this for the past 20 years.

If, on the other hand, pitta is high, the person will tend to suffer from hot, hot skin rashes, heartburn, burning in the urine, irritation, headache, nausea and vertigo. And if the pitta guy does not learn to manage these conditions effectively through herbs, diet and lifestyle changes, they will get worse.

Another important difference is that Ayurvedic medicines lack the typical side effects of modern medicines. For example, swelling and pain occur with arthritis, for which modern medicine administers analgesics. Sometimes it happens that because of the pain medication, you get two side effects. You went to the doctor to solve a problem and now you have two more problems.

We do not give analgesics. We work on the cause, not on the effect. We try to discover how the condition is being created. What is the cause? And that is another big difference.

Another distinctive feature of Ayurveda is that our medicines work simultaneously on the mind, body and emotions. We say that each individual is unique; people are not all the same; the mind works differently in everyone. This also differentiates Ayurveda from conventional medicine, which often does not take these differences into account.
