Have you ever tried to learn Spanish? Many tried online Spanish learning during the pandemic; I was one of them. I found the lockdown a great time to learn Spanish; it was a great time to do a lot of things. I found that during the lockdown in Spain, which lasted for a good few months, I cut out many distractions in my life. This allowed me to focus on the more essential things.

After searching the internet for Spanish lessons near me, I realised that I wouldn’t be able to have physical lessons. This led me to increase my search, and I found hablainstitute.com. Before the pandemic, I would never have considered doing Spanish lessons online, but a lot changed post-Covid.

Spanish lessons requirements

I had a few requirements regarding a Spanish teacher.

  1. Native Speaker
  2. Enthusiastic and fun
  3. Easy-going and relaxed
  4. A focus on conversational skills rather than hammering grammar

After much deliberation, I found that the teachers at Habla Institute ticked my boxes. They are based in Ireland but did Spanish Language Holidays in Malaga, which is where I live.
I ended up with Lolo, who was an excellent teacher. He was very enthusiastic and had a good sense of humour. This helped me to relax during the Spanish lessons.

My motivation

After living in Malaga for a few years, I realised I was missing out on a lot due to my poor language skills. It was the day-to-day stuff, the banter at the supermarket or café. Informal chats with colleagues etc. I really started to feel it when we had a baby. In Malaga, Spanish women (and men) stopped all the time and commented on my baby saying Guapo, which means beautiful. They would ask me questions about him, and I couldn’t answer; I felt like an idiot.

This motivated me to start taking Spanish lessons, and I’m really glad I did. I feel more confident now in my interactions with Spanish people. Even day-to-day stuff has become easier as I don’t relinquish specific tasks now. It’s also made my wife’s life easier as she doesn’t have to be my translator all the time!

Online Spanish learning wasn’t even on my radar before the lockdown. Now I’m still taking online Spanish lessons even though there are many Spanish language schools in my area. I just find learning Spanish from the comfort of my own home hard to beat. Plus there’s no travelling time or thinking about what to wear etc. I really recommend it to anyone who is looking to start Spanish lessons.
