A couple, who undergoes IVF treatment, may be advised to have their embryos undergo genetic testing before they get implanted. But remember that not every couple undergoing IVF needs these. It is advised only if there are multiple implantation failures, multiple abortions or if there are known diseases that may be transmitted through heredity.
The two genetic screening tests are:
• PGD – This is a type of screening used to detect genes linked to specific diseases. With the result of this test, embryos without certain predisposition to specific diseases may be selected for embryo transfer, thereby eliminating the risk of certain genetically transmitted diseases.
•PGS – This is used to determine if the cells in the embryo have the right number of chromosomes. With this test, and embryologist is able to select one or more embryos with the best chance of giving a pregnancy and a healthy baby.
After these two tests, only the embryos free of genetic abnormalities are transferred into the uterus.
Remember that embryos are microscopic entities. Working with them and taking biopsies of these microscopic entities requires extraordinary skill and the best of the equipment. When the embryo sample is being taken for the test or when transporting the same, its health is at risk. If it gets damaged, it will not result in a successful pregnancy.
