Portuguese Water Dogs have an interesting and adventurous historical background. They were once part of the crew of fishing boats – herding fish into nets and gathering lost gear. They traveled far –from the Atlantic coast to Newfoundland's cold fishing areas. Some records show these dogs swam in the ocean to send messages from one fishing boat to another.

These dogs have curly coats and are medium in size. They’re called by other labels such as “Portuguese Fishing Dogs” and “Cao de Agua” (which translates in English as “dog of the water”). They excel in water because of their unique physical feature – webbed feet.

These water dogs are intelligent, calm, and diligent. Today, they no longer fish and retrieve lost tackles. But they’re sweet, loving companions of families. Bo Obama is a famous Portuguese Water Dog. He’s known as the First Dog of the United States with commendable love of the water, intelligence, and alertness.
