How to train your dog or puppy | The Humane Society of the United States

One of the important first steps you have to take to have a happy life together with your pup is potty training. That is why you must do your research on housetraining before you even bring home a puppy. As soon as your new puppy arrives home, potty training may already begin.

Here are some key points to remember when potty training your puppy:

  • Follow a regular feeding schedule for your pup. Remember, consistent mealtimes translate to consistent potty time.
  • Create a housetraining schedule for your pup and stick to it.  The schedule may be at least every 2 hours such as after they wake up or first thing in the morning or when they wake from an afternoon nap, after playing, after eating or drinking, and last thing at night.
  • Pick a potty spot outside and make sure to take your pup to that regular spot every time it is time for him to relieve himself. You may also train your pup by identifying a short command or word/phrase that he can associate with doing the deed.
  • Focus on positive behavior. Reward your puppy for every successful potty session. Try not to reprimand or scold him when an accident or mess happens.

Frequent potty accidents in housetrained dogs should prompt a visit to an animal clinic Cornelius, NC for proper medical attention. Read more here.
