The changing seasons and skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, rosacea, and acne can damage the skin’s natural barrier. Luckily, products such as Cavilon and Sorbaderm have been developed and are available in the skincare market. These barrier creams keep your skin hydrated and protected.

How do they work?

Cavilon and Sorbaderm prevent the skin from drying out by acting as topical barriers and stopping transepidermal water loss. Though they might sound like moisturisers, skin barriers such as Cavilon and Sorbaderm are different. Moisturiser are generally for hydrating the outer layer of the skin. In contrast, barrier creams restore the skin barrier itself. They repair the damaged skin and can also heal tears and existing wounds.

Which one should you use?

Different barrier creams also have distinct functions and specifications. Let’s talk about the differences between Cavilon and Sorbaderm.

Cavilon is an alcohol-free liquid barrier, so it is pain-free when used on sore and damaged skin. It also dries quickly to form a transparent coating on the skin while keeping a breathable feel.

Cavilon provides up to 72 hours of protection from urine, faeces, and other bodily fluids. When using this cream, avoid wearing any clothing or pads over it while it dries. Allow it to dry completely.

Sorbaderm is a skin barrier product that protects intact, chafed, and irritated skin from damage caused by bodily fluids. It has a moisturising effect that provides a long-lasting waterproof barrier. You can use it with physical medication or dressings as it does not reduce the adhesion of medical tapes.

Like other skin products, these skin barriers should be used with precaution. Check the ingredients of the skin barrier you intend to use and ensure that you are not allergic to them before you apply them. It’s also important to avoid mixing and matching. Don’t use two types of skin barriers at a time.
