Russell Crowe's renaissance appears to be upon us. Although I'm saying this because of “The Nice Guys”, so I must be wrong. He has undeniably reached a segment of his career where he has nothing left to prove, and is often the best at every endeavor in which he enters. (He made “The Pope’s Exorcist” much better than it would have been with everyone else in that part, and I kind of hope they make 5 more.)
It almost all comes down to the fact that the filmmaker trusts his natural talent. This is the reason I was drawn to Adam Cooper’s “Sleeping Dogs,” a film that felt like Crowe’s “Memento,” a twisty noir that plays on memory, perception and an unreliable narrator.
While Crowe offers more to this sleepy film than it deserves, it certainly worries me now that the Oscar winner might go in a different direction, getting sucked into the world of cheap VOD thrillers that have dominated the resumes of actors who used to be more discerning ( sorry, Travolta fans). Crowe is superior to “Sleeping Dogs.” Most actors are.
Based on the Book of Mirrors using E.O. Chirovici, “Sleeping Dogs” opens with its protagonist plunged into the nightmare of dementia. Retired police officer Roy Freeman (Crowe) has posted notes around his house that remind him not just of simple matters like making toast, but of his own name. Of course, this will be one of those videos with a “plot-convenient disease,” a specifically blatant piece of disease exploitation, in my opinion, that either traps the protagonist at the bottom when the plot wants to or simply disappears when it's time to build momentum. .
