Any cat parent will probably agree that the purring of a cat is a very comforting sound. Feeling that rhythmic inhale and exhale, along with that sound of contentment, has indeed made many people smile many times. While everyone is familiar with purring as a sign of happiness, many aren't aware of the other purposes of a cat purring. Some studies imply that purring benefits not only the cat but the owner too.

So what is a cat's purr? Purring is a cat behavior that uses the feline's diaphragm and the larynx. The muscles of these two organs vibrate 20 to 30 times every second, and the passing of the air through the vibrating muscles produces what we call “purr.”

Although purring is mostly observable to domestic cats, almost all felines can actually purr. However, cat purring doesn't always mean contentment.
