I've always been the type who feels guilty resting. If I wasn't doing something productive, I felt like I was falling behind on some invisible checklist. It sounds harmless enough written out like that, but living inside it for years wore me down in ways I didn't fully notice until my body started showing it.
The Signs I Kept Explaining Away
Tension headaches that showed up almost weekly. A jaw I'd catch myself clenching during completely ordinary moments, driving, watching TV, waiting in line. Sleep that never quite felt deep enough, even after a full eight hours. I explained all of it away separately. Headaches from screen time. Jaw clenching from "just a habit." Bad sleep from too much caffeine. It never occurred to me they might all be coming from the same place.
The Week That Finally Got My Attention
It came to a head during an unusually demanding work week. I remember sitting at my desk on a Thursday evening, done with everything I needed to do, and physically unable to relax. My body was still in go mode even though there was nothing left to go toward. That disconnect scared me a little, being exhausted and wired at the same time.
How Reiki Ended Up on My Radar
A coworker mentioned she'd started Reiki sessions after a stressful year of her own and described it as one of the only things that actually helped her body catch up with how tired she already felt mentally. I knew almost nothing about it, and honestly assumed it would feel strange or overly spiritual for someone as skeptical as me. Curiosity won out anyway.
What the First Session Actually Involved
It started with a simple, calm conversation, nothing intense, just questions about stress levels, sleep, and where in my body I tended to hold tension without realizing it. Then the session itself was quiet and still, no pressure to do or perform anything, which honestly felt unfamiliar in a good way after years of treating rest as something to earn.
Understanding Energy Balance in Simple Terms
The practitioner explained a bit about energy flow and how prolonged stress tends to settle in specific areas of the body when it isn't given anywhere to go. It gave language to something I'd been feeling for years without ever naming it properly. I finally had a framework for why my jaw, shoulders, and sleep all seemed tangled up in the same underlying tension.
What Shifted After a Few Sessions
The most immediate change was how deeply I slept afterward, a kind of rest I hadn't experienced in longer than I could remember. Over the following weeks, the tension headaches became noticeably less frequent. I also started catching myself clenching my jaw earlier, before it built into a full afternoon headache.
The Bigger Shift I Didn't Expect
What surprised me most wasn't physical; it was permission. Permission to actually be still without treating it as wasted time. That shift alone changed how I approached rest generally, not just during sessions but in ordinary moments throughout my week.
Where I Am Now
It's been a few months, and I still catch myself falling into old patterns sometimes; old habits don't disappear completely. But I have a genuine sense now of what stillness actually feels like in my body, and a way to return to it instead of just pushing through until I eventually crash.
Where This Started
The sessions that introduced me to all of this were through ICBR Wellness. Their Reiki healing consultation, particularly the emphasis on energy balance and emotional wellness, gave me something I didn't know I was missing, an actual, physical understanding of what it means to rest.
