Renewable Energy Market in India: What Businesses Should Know Before Investing

The numbers are hard to ignore. By mid-2026, India's renewable capacity had crossed 288 GW- nearly four times what it was in 2014. Clean energy now covers 52% of the country's total installed power.

Raw capacity figures don't tell you where the money actually goes, though. Or where it gets stuck.

Here's what I've picked up watching this space up close.

Solar runs the show. Wind is wobbling.

Solar added roughly 26 GW in just the first half of 2026- a 43% jump over the same window last year. Wind? It slipped about 16%. That gap matters when you're deciding where to park capital, because solar brings cheaper tariffs, faster build times, and a policy tailwind that wind doesn't have at the moment.

Rooftop is the quieter story. Residential rooftop installs more than doubled in a year under the PM Surya Ghar scheme. We've watched this play out- inquiries from small businesses and homeowners around Gujarat went from occasional to steady.

Location decides more than people expect.

Gujarat and Rajasthan are absorbing most of the new solar, and not by accident. Land access, grid readiness, and state-level policy quietly make or break a project's timeline. A site that looks perfect on paper can sit idle for months if the power evacuation infrastructure isn't ready.

Worth studying if you want a concrete example: KP Group. Its listed arm, KPI Green Energy, has scaled out of Gujarat as a solar and hybrid player — a useful window into how a Renewable Energy Developer in India actually grows, through captive deals and hybrid projects rather than one headline plant.

Ask the boring questions first.

Returns here are real. They're just not automatic. A few things routinely trip up newcomers:

  • Payment delays from state discoms- the most common headache by far.
  • Module pricing swings, especially as import rules shift.
  • Land and clearance timelines that rarely match the brochure.

None of that should scare you off. It should shape your due diligence.

So where does that leave you?

The Renewable Energy Market India story is one of the fastest-growing anywhere- the country now ranks third globally for installed renewable capacity. These tailwinds are structural, not seasonal.

Still, "growing fast" and "easy to profit from" aren't the same sentence. The developers doing well are the ones who understood grid access and policy nuance before they poured any concrete.

Do that homework, and this market rewards you. Skip it, and it'll teach you an expensive lesson instead.
