Why Retirement Planning Needs Urgency
Retirement can last 25 to 30 years while inflation erodes what a rupee buys. AMFI data shows 10.02 crore SIP accounts contributing in August 2026. The task is to tie that saving to a retirement number.
Step 1: Estimate Future Expenses
Start with today's monthly spending and project it forward.
Example: If you spend ₹60,000 a month today and inflation averages 6%, you would need about ₹2.6 lakh a month in 25 years to maintain the same lifestyle. Add a separate line for healthcare, which tends to rise faster than general inflation.
Step 2: Calculate Your Corpus
A common rule of thumb is to build 25 to 30 times your first-year annual expenses. This keeps withdrawals near 3% to 4% of the corpus each year. Continuing the example above, annual expenses of about ₹31 lakh imply a corpus of roughly ₹7.7 crore to ₹9.3 crore in future rupees.
Returns, inflation and lifespan are uncertain, so revisit the number yearly.
Step 3: Choose the Right Vehicles
| Vehicle | Role in your plan | Points to note |
|---|---|---|
| EPF | Stable base for salaried workers | Contribution is mandatory for eligible employees |
| PPF | Safe, long-term debt allocation | 15-year lock-in, government-backed |
| NPS | Market-linked retirement account | Partly used to buy an annuity at maturity, subject to rules |
| Equity mutual funds | Growth to beat inflation | Volatile, best with long horizons |

Step 4: Start Early and Step Up
Time matters more than amount.
Example: At an assumed 12% annual return, a ₹10,000 monthly SIP started at 25 grows to roughly ₹6.5 crore by age 60. The same SIP started at 35 reaches roughly ₹1.9 crore. A ten-year delay costs about two-thirds of the outcome. If you start late, compensate by stepping up your SIP each year, for example by 10% with every raise.
Step 5: Shift Risk Gradually
- Ten years before retirement: begin moving a portion from equity to debt
- At retirement: keep two to three years of expenses in stable assets
- After retirement: retain some equity to fight inflation
This reduces sequence of returns risk, which is the danger of a market fall just as you begin withdrawals.
Step 6: Plan Withdrawals and Healthcare
A systematic withdrawal plan from debt and equity funds can create monthly income. Health insurance deserves special attention. Individual and family floater policies became GST-exempt on 22 September 2025, and the moratorium period is now five years, after which claims generally cannot be rejected for non-disclosure except for fraud. Common Retirement Mistakes
- Withdrawing EPF on job change. It breaks compounding.
- Ignoring inflation and keeping everything in fixed deposits.
- Sacrificing retirement for children's goals. Education can be financed. Retirement cannot.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much money do I need to retire in India?
A common guide is 25 to 30 times your first-year annual expenses at retirement, adjusted for inflation. Your actual number depends on lifestyle, health costs and other income.
When should I start retirement planning?
As early as possible, ideally with your first salary. Starting at 25 instead of 35 can multiply your final corpus several times, even with the same monthly SIP.
Is NPS good for retirement?
NPS offers low-cost, disciplined, market-linked investing with possible tax benefits, but part of the corpus must be used for an annuity under current rules.
