We all know where the growth of Samsung started. The revolution was brought by the Samsung Galaxy S in 2010, which brought a new era in the Samsung smartphone business. When Samsung Galaxy S came out, it had good specs and solid design, which gave Samsung an edge over other Android phones. Where other Android phones were still finding their feet, Samsung was already starting to become a fan favorite, and Galaxy S was giving them a platform to launch from.

Samsung didn’t release a single Samsung Galaxy S. It released a whole family of the phone. In the US, there were four different variants of the phone among different carriers. Including AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, and you can see the difference between the models of these companies. Because if you buy a Sprint version, it was called Samsung Epic 4G and had a QWERTY keyboard and a 4G. It was a big thing at that time.

Let’s take a jog down the memory lane of how things started with the Samsung Galaxy S.

The Galaxy S at its core:

The Samsung Galaxy S had the biggest screen that was available in 2010 with a 4-inch super AMOLED display. The Samsung Galaxy S also impressed us with its 800×480 resolution. People complained about the PenTile technology of the screen, but the screen was brighter, more contrary, and more colorful than LCD phones it was competing with. Now talking about the processor, the phone had a 1GHz “Hummingbird” chip inside. The Samsung Galaxy S also had 512 GB of RAM, and storage was flexible from 8GB to 16GB. We don’t think any of the phones at that time were fast as this phone.

As far as we can recall, this was the first phone to get a good 5MP camera. However, the front-facing camera of 1.3MP was only in few phones. The camera was excellent, and the camera app was good for shooting photos. It was a dream come true for most people.

It was built around Android 2.1 Éclair and had TouchWiz 3.0 for the best software experience. The phone also included some of the social networking feeds, such as Myspace.

Critical Reception

It was well-received by everyone. The tech press generally loved it. People loved the vibrant display of the phone, the 5MP camera, and two days of battery life. But there is also an important bar on which we judge a phone, and that is its sale. The global sale of the Samsung Galaxy S started on June 4, 2010, in Singapore. As people have never seen something like this before, they lined up to buy the phone. Samsung claimed that their carrier partner sold out the phone by the first weekend. In total, Samsung sold about 24 million Galaxy S. Also, with more than 10 million sold in the first seven months of availability. We don’t think any other phone was as popular as Samsung Galaxy S.

Samsung S got so popular that it got Samsung to generate a squeal after the sequel, and then from Samsung Galaxy III, Samsung sold 100 million phones in 2012. With the new Galaxy III, Samsung surpassed Nokia to become the world’s largest seller of mobile phones.

The Final Thought

This was just a tribute to the phone who revolutionized the phone industry. The phones wouldn’t have reached the height they are today. If Samsung wouldn’t have shown everyone what can be done with the Galaxy S. The newest entry in the Samsung Galaxy S lineup is S21, which sets the standard for today’s phones. Every major phone producing company is trying to compete with that. They still have the leading piece of hardware that keeps their phone a notch above the other phones.
