Sariya - How To Balance Price And Quality For Long-Term Construction?

Whether you are building a residential house, commercial building, or industrial structure, steel is one of the most important components. One of the biggest decisions made is choosing the right steel/TMT bars. Many buyers compare the prices of TMT bars from different brands and select the cheapest one. However, when it comes to structural safety and durability, the quality of the steel is more important than saving costs.

The Thermo-Mechanically Treated (TMT) bars provide the required strength to buildings. The concrete used in structures has good compression strength but is weak in tension. Steel is used to provide the required tensile strength and handle bending forces. The quality of steel used directly impacts the strength and lifespan of structures.

Good quality TMT bars or Sariya are manufactured using controlled production processes and strict quality control. The bars have key characteristics such as high tensile strength, excellent bendability, good ductility, excellent weldability, fire resistance, earthquake resistance, corrosion resistance, consistent dimensions, and a uniform ribbed pattern on the surface.

Lower price does not mean better value

A construction project involves several expenses such as bricks, cement, labour, electrical work, plumbing, and finishing. TMT bars are a major part of the budget; therefore, buyers look for lower prices. If two brands have a significant price difference, then why should you not buy the cheaper one?

The answer to this lies in the quality of materials, manufacturing quality, testing standards and long-term performance. A lower-priced TMT bar may decrease the initial cost but it can lead to problems later on.

Low-quality bars may corrode faster, have lower durability, reduce the structural strength, and require higher maintenance and repair costs. Saving a small amount during construction may lead to much higher costs in the future.

Consider these factors before buying TMT bars

  • Select a grade of the TMT bar recommended by your structural engineer depending on your project requirements.
  • Not all TMT bars are processed using the same manufacturing process. Reputed manufacturers invest in modern production technology, strict quality control, regular lab testing, consistent raw materials and certified manufacturing processes. Buy from a manufacturer known for maintaining consistent quality and timely supply.
  • You can easily judge a TMT bar by checking its certifications. Select bars that are ISO-certified, BIS-certified, manufactured using relevant manufacturing standards and go through strict quality control measures.
  • Ask the supplier whether the bars go through mechanical and chemical testing before dispatch.
  • A reliable supplier is a must, as it will prevent delays during construction.
  • Experienced manufacturers help you with product selection and project requirements.

A building is constructed to last for decades, and using high-quality TMT bars helps to improve structural stability, increase durability, better withstand external forces, and reduce maintenance requirements. Planning for the long-term will help you make better construction decisions.

If you are not sure which bars to purchase, then consult your structural engineer or contractor. They can suggest the right grade and specifications based on the soil conditions, load requirements, building type and local construction standards. Selecting quality bars can improve the safety of the buildings.
