Mars is considered as the planet of war, aggressiveness, anger. Planets are the controlling forces behind natural occurrences in our lives. Hence, what could be the significance of Mars? What remedies can be suggested for problems caused by Mars? These are some questions which people often ask astrologers. Understanding this quality of Mars is extremely important in order to rectify its negative influences, if any.
There are a few things which must be understood about Mars before we can attempt to understand its significance and remedies. It is believed that there are certain regions of the universe beyond the physical boundaries of our planet Earth where conditions might still prevail as they existed on earth several hundred million years ago.
We are unable to perceive these conditions on earth with our limited sensory perceptions, but they are being constantly transmitted to this planet – it works as the receiver of these signals just like a radio receiver.
This part of the universe is known as ‘Aakash'. The regions containing these signals are also known as Aakash. The signals being transmitted are not just random noise, but more like a message or an order. Aakash is known to contain seven types of information which the earth receives in the form of these transmissions. These are more popularly termed as “Bhav” (mood), “Roop”, “Gati”, Vatyantar, “Roop” (appearance), Karan and “Dhatu”.
Mars is the only planet that receives all these seven types of information from Aakash. It also carries out necessary actions to put these plans into action here on earth. Mars is thus believed to have a separate existence from other planets, independent of their influence.
According to astrologers, Mars in Vedic astrology is the ruler of the ‘Kuja' house. This house is singularly responsible for our will power, courage and self confidence. Mars also provides us with necessary energy to act without fear or hesitation when the situation demands it e.g., war. We can thus say that Mars gives us strength of mind and body.
Aakash has seven types of information which are transmitted to earth via the planet Mars. These are, “mood”, “appearance”, “extent”, “speed”, course, direction and location. Each of these is referred to as a ‘Bhaav'. With respect to our Earth, Mars controls the following ‘Bhaav':
Mood : Mars controls our personal desire, ambition, anger, etc.
Appearance : It is responsible for the manner in which we present ourselves to others. For example, accidents or circumstances may result in deformities of the body e.g., paralysis, stunted growth, etc.
Extent : It controls the territory over which one has power or influence.
Speed : The speed at which we work, our progress in relation to others is controlled by Mars.
Course : It determines the direction in which an individual's life takes him/her. For example, it denotes whether a person will have domestic problems or foreign tours or experience changes in his/her residence.
Direction : This is the direction from which problems come to us, e.g., it may denote whether one's enemies will be foreign or domestic.
Location : Whether we are living a happy and contented life or not; this is controlled by Mars' location with respect to the various houses in a person's horoscope.
Mars is also believed to be involved with other planets in our solar system. It has been noticed that the influence of Mars seen from here on earth is almost always identical or similar to its influence upon another planet. For example, when Mars transits through Scorpio, it makes the native very independent and self-reliant.
This effect is almost identical to what transiting Jupiter or Rahu is in Scorpio, but the reasons behind this influence are completely different. The reason for Mars' influence on a person who has Scorpio ascendant is because it affects the 7th house from an individual's horoscope which also happens to be Scorpio. The true reason behind Jupiter's and Rahu's influence in Scorpio is because they both become exalted here at the same time.
