Halloween is almost here, and while the best gyms Sacramento offers are more welcoming than spooky, that doesn’t mean you can’t get your ghoul on while working out to celebrate the season.

In particular, a few Halloween-themed exercises will work up a sweat just as much as a fright. Whether you’re on leg day or need an active warmup, these five exercises will bring your workout back to life.

Deadlifts

Zombies aren’t the dead getting lifted this October. The deadlift is a great choice if you want to level up your lower body workout with a tried-and-true compound exercise.

This works out your posterior chain, improving some of the biggest muscles in your body, including glutes, hamstrings, and quads.

To perform a deadlift, stand with your feet at a shoulder distance and hinge at your hips while keeping your back straight and shoulder forward. Then, grab your bar, dumbbells, or kettlebells, squeeze your glutes, and engage your core to bring the weight up. Pause at the top and then go back down.

A few more reps of these, and you’ll be able to pick the heaviest pumpkins at the pumpkin patch.

Spider Curl

Spiders have eight spindly arms. But with spider curls, you’ll have two big and strong arms perfect for carrying your kids’ candy bags when they get too tired.

Start by finding an incline bench at one of your favorite Elk Grove gyms and putting it at a 30- to 60-degree angle. Then, get two dumbbells at a weight you can curl. Sit on the bench with your chest against the backrest, with your arms hanging straight down. Then, start curling the dumbbells as you normally would.

This exercise helps isolate your biceps and stops you from using other muscles in the lift. It’s a great exercise to help build arms that would make any spider jealous.

Dead Bugs

What’s creepier than a bug? A dead bug.

And what better core workout than a dead bug?

To do this exercise, you start on your back with your knees bent into a tabletop position. Raise your arms straight up to the ceiling, and alternate lowering your right arm/left leg and left arm/right leg. Keep your core engaged while lowering your arms and legs to keep your back straight.

It’s a great addition to any workout, yoga class, or Halloween party.

Frankenstein Walks

A Frankenstein walk is both an excellent active warmup and a great way to get into character for your costume party.

You start by standing with your hands straight out in front of you, much like Frankenstein’s monster, and then take small, slow steps. With each step, kick your opposite leg up to try and touch your hands. Do this for 10 to 15 steps on each side to get your legs warmed up and ready to haunt your leg day.

Dead Hangs

Finally, we have dead hangs.

The dead hang is a surefire way to work towards a full bodyweight pull-up while also improving grip strength. All you need is a pull-up bar. You grab onto the bar and use your core strength to pull your legs up. After that, imagine you’re a bat on a cave ceiling and see how long you can hang there. Add these to your back and shoulder routine for some major Halloween gains.
