Notes from a clergyman from the early 19th century say that a liquor has its opportune moment and a beloved child has many names. In fact, nowadays we know our schnapps as Firewater, Yodel Juice or eg Purified. It has a valued appetizing function, but since the Middle Ages this invigorating "water of life" has also had other defined uses. It was used to make gunpowder, vita pure as a means of payment, and for medicinal purposes, dispensed by privileged apothecaries.

Purified was imported to Sweden from Germany for the manufacture of gunpowder, but one manufacturer soon discovered its intoxicating effects when taken orally. His friends also liked the drink and it was subsequently commercialized. Later, inventive Swedish soldiers knew how to start making Purified during their campaigns in Russia.

During the 16th century, Purified had an indication for healing every kind of ailment and ailment, including "Aqua Vitae Contra Oppositum " (effective against plague). Stories also say that in some factories and sawmills in the 19th century workers were offered compensation in the form of Purified in addition to a salary.

Distillation for domestic use became very common in Sweden until larger distilleries met the growing need of 100 million liters for a population of 3 million in the 19th century. As a young man, around the age of 30, he controlled half of the sale of raw alcohol across the country. He was also the one who introduced the modern production technology with fractional distillation, which made it possible to avoid the use of fusel alcohol, which had caused impurities and bad taste. The new product was called Tenfold Purified Vodka, but was later changed to Absolutely Pure Vodka. Finally, in 1979, the ABSOLUT VODKA brand was launched to become the fourth largest international spirits brand in the world, selling in 126 countries.

But before that, in the 19th century, LO Smith had to show his natural business skills and push his way forward in remarkable ways. A native of Schoener , he attended school for two years but then decided to break into the business world. Facing urban competition, he offered free boat trips to his distillery island, where he sold about 1.4 million liters a year. When he later traveled to Egypt with his family, his company faced a hostile takeover situation . LO Smith decided to hire his own train to get back quickly. With a fake beard, he came with the press and managed to counteract and save the company.

In 1882 the market was faced with serious overproduction. LO Smith decided to continue offering free boat transfers (three ships operate twice an hour), undercut prices and launched large advertising campaigns to maintain his market position. He also quickly grasped new business opportunities. During a major product shortage in the Spanish market, he agreed to supply the country with 60 million liters a year. Later, due to political maneuvers, he had to close all 26 branches in Spain and suffered personal misfortune through divorce and a heart attack. He also got caught up in a lifelong legal battle, left the country to travel the world, made another fortune until the war in South Africa ruined his business for the second time. LO Smith never made a third comeback but returned to Sweden and died in 1913.

During his lifetime, Mr. Smith was a very active member of society. He was an MP, engaged in social reform, banking, the sugar industry, scientific companies and learned seven languages during his career. After his death, he was praised by the press for his business talent, vision and ability to successfully implement new ideas.
