If you are taking a taxi at BHX Airport, there are three places to know: the black cab rank just outside the terminal, the paid car parks where pre-booked drivers usually wait, and the two drop-off areas for departures.

This guide explains where each one is, what it costs, and how to find your driver without stress. It is written for passengers arriving at or leaving Birmingham Airport, and for anyone booking or meeting a taxi there.

Every price and location below comes from Birmingham Airport's own website, checked on 1 October 2026. Airport charges and layouts change, sometimes at short notice. Please check the official drop off and pick up page before you travel.

Quick answer: BHX taxi zones at a glance

Birmingham Airport has one terminal, so all taxi pick-ups and drop-offs happen around the same building.

What you needWhere it isWalk to terminalCost (official, from 6 Aug 2026)
Black cab rank (no booking)Just outside the terminal buildingVery shortMetered or quoted fare, paid to driver
Premium Set Down (drop-off)Right outside the terminalUnder 1 minute£8 for up to 15 minutes

Car Park 5 (recommended pick-up)Further out, free bus available5 to 10 minutesFrom £12 for up to an hour

The red routes around the airport roads are no-stopping zones. Stopping on them can lead to a £100 charge, reduced to £50 if paid within 14 days.

A note on prices: the airport's main drop off page still showed £7 for Premium Set Down when we checked. The airport's tariff notice and the Premium Set Down page both show £8. We use the newer £8 figure, as it is the later official update.

The taxi rank at Birmingham Airport arrivals

The official taxi rank sits just outside the terminal building, and you do not need to book. You walk out of arrivals, join the queue and take the next black cab.

What Birmingham Airport says about the rank:

  • Operator: Complete Taxi Management UK is the airport's official black taxi supplier.
  • Vehicles: licensed black taxis, and the fleet is described as 100% wheelchair accessible.
  • Help on site: a staff member is available at the rank to assist passengers.
  • Destinations: any destination, from a nearby hotel to anywhere in the country.

You can also get a quote and pre-book a black cab through the same operator if you want a fixed plan.

What we could not verify: the airport does not publish rank fares or typical queue times. Fares depend on distance, time of day and the operator's pricing. Ask the driver or rank staff for an estimate before you set off.

BHX pickup zone for pre-booked taxis and minicabs

Birmingham Airport does not run a free pick-up zone. Pre-booked drivers, like any other driver collecting passengers, are expected to use a paid car park.

The airport's official advice for meeting passengers:

  • Car Park 5 is the recommended car park for meeting passengers. It is about a 5 to 10 minute walk to the terminal, with tariffs from £12 for up to an hour.
  • Car Park 1 is a 1-minute walk. The airport suggests it for anyone who needs a longer stay while picking up.
  • Car Parks 2 and 3 are reached from Door C, near the Regis building.

Premium Set Down is not a pick-up zone. The airport describes it as being only for dropping off travelling passengers.

Transparency note: we did not find an official, separately signed pick-up zone just for private hire vehicles on the airport's website. Where exactly your driver waits depends on the taxi company. Your booking confirmation should tell you. If it does not, ask the company before you fly.

Who pays for parking? Some private hire firms include the car park fee in your fare, and others charge it as an extra. This varies by company, so check your quote before you book.

BHX drop off: Premium Set Down vs the Drop Off car park

When a taxi drops you for a flight, it will use one of two areas. Both are barrier-free and use number plate cameras, so there is no ticket.

Prices are the official turn-up tariffs from 9am on 6 August 2026 (tariff notice). Charges keep rising after 30 minutes.

Key rules to know:

  • Pay within 24 hours. You can pay at the on-site machines, online through Post Pay, or with an AutoPay account. The Premium Set Down machines are card only.
  • No return within one hour applies at the Drop Off car park.
  • A free bus runs between the car parks and the terminal, as well as the covered walkway.
  • Do not stop on red routes, even for a quick drop. Use a drop-off area instead.

Who pays the drop-off fee in a taxi? This depends on the company. A black cab or minicab may add it to the fare. Ask when you book, so the total is clear.

Birmingham Airport arrivals: from landing to your taxi

Once you clear passport control and collect your bags, the route to your taxi is short. Here is the usual order.

  1. Switch your phone on as soon as you land. Check for a message from your driver or taxi company.
  2. Pass through passport control and baggage reclaim. This can take a while at busy times, so tell your driver if you are delayed.
  3. Enter the arrivals hall. If you booked a meet and greet service, your driver usually waits here holding a name board. Your booking should state the exact spot.
  4. No booking? Head outside to the taxi rank. It is just outside the terminal, and staff are there to help.
  5. Driver waiting in a car park? Follow the map signs. For Car Park 1, leave by Door A and cross in front of Diamond House. For Car Parks 2 and 3, leave by Door C and walk towards the Regis building.
  6. Check the car before you get in. Match the registration number, driver name and company to your booking.

Coming by train instead? The free Air-Rail Link connects the airport to Birmingham International station. It runs from 03:30 to 00:30 daily.

How to find your driver at BHX

The easiest way to avoid a missed pick-up is to agree the details before you fly. A clear meeting point and a working phone number solve most problems.

Before you fly:

  • Give the company your flight number, not just your landing time. Many firms track flights, but only if they have the number.
  • Ask where the driver will wait: arrivals hall, a named car park or the drop-off area.
  • Ask how long they will wait for free, and what happens if your flight is late.
  • Save the company's phone number. Do not rely only on an app if you may have poor signal or no roaming.

After you land:

  • Message the driver when you reach baggage reclaim, and again when you have your bags.
  • If they are in a car park, ask for the car park number, row and car registration.
  • Stay inside the terminal until you know where to go. It is easier to meet at a fixed point than to wander between car parks.

If you still cannot find them:

  1. Call the driver, then the company office.
  2. Agree on one clear meeting point, such as a named terminal door.
  3. If you cannot reach anyone, use the official taxi rank outside the terminal. Tell the company afterwards so you are not charged twice.

Rank taxi, pre-booked minicab or train: which suits you?

There is no single best option. It depends on your budget, luggage, group size and arrival time.

Birmingham Airport lists two approved taxi and private hire booking partners: Complete Taxi Management UK for black cabs, and minicabit for comparing licensed private hire quotes. Being listed by the airport is not a guarantee of price or service, so compare quotes as you would anywhere else.

The airport says Birmingham New Street is about 10 minutes away by direct train from Birmingham International.

Accessibility and Blue Badge drop-offs

Blue Badge holders can get 30 minutes free in Premium Set Down, including when they arrive by taxi (Premium Set Down page).

How it works:

  • Before leaving, the driver goes to the NCP Customer Service Cabin inside Premium Set Down.
  • They show the Blue Badge and the vehicle registration number.
  • The Blue Badge holder must be present for staff to validate the free time.
  • After 30 minutes, standard charges apply.

The official black cab fleet at the rank is described as fully wheelchair accessible. If you need help moving through the airport, you can pre-book support through the airport's assisted travel service. The airport says it cannot be held liable for missed flights if assistance is not pre-booked and less than 3 hours is allowed on the day.

Staying safe: licensed taxis only

Only get into a black cab from the official rank or a car you have booked in advance. In England, a private hire car (minicab) must be pre-booked through a licensed operator. It cannot legally pick up passengers who approach it on the street.

Simple checks that help:

  • Ignore anyone in the terminal offering a ride you did not book.
  • Before getting in, confirm the driver knows your name and destination. Do not offer them the details first.
  • Look for the licence badge on the driver and the licence plate or sticker on the car.
  • Match the registration number to your booking message.
  • Share your trip details with a friend if you are travelling alone at night.

If something feels wrong, go back inside and speak to airport staff, or use the official rank.

What this guide does not cover: taxi fares to specific destinations, queue times at the rank, and each private hire company's waiting rules. None of these are published by the airport, and they vary. Online guides often quote older drop-off prices of £5, £6 or £7, which were correct at earlier dates but have since risen.
