There are approximately a thousand textile mills in our country. The textile industry contributes to India's economic prosperity, via the handloom sector as well as the mechanized sector. One of the most prominent engineering specializations is “textile engineering.” It is a large technological research field. Textile engineering revolves around the industries of garments, colours, and fabrics.
Textile engineering encompasses the principles, laws, and scientific processes used in the development and production of textile fabrics and yarns of various types. It also entails the study of scientific principles about the analysis of polymers used in the production of textile fibre.
Courses Offered in India
In India, there are four different types of textile engineering programs. Let's take a closer look at each of them:
Polytechnic diploma course with the duration of 3 years after 10+2 examination
• Diploma in Textile Technology / Textile Engineering
• Diploma in Fabrication Technology & Erection Engineering
UG degree courses leading to the B.Tech. with the duration of 4 years after 10+2 examination
• Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech.) in Textile Engineering
PG degree courses leading to the M.Tech. with the duration of 2 years after the completion of UG degree in engineering.
• Master of Technology (M.Tech.) in Textile Technology
• Master of Technology (M.Tech.) in Textile Engineering
• Master of Technology (M.Tech.) in Textile Chemistry
Doctoral degree courses leading to the PhD domain with the duration of 1-2 years after the completion of PG degree.
Career Scope and Progression
In India, the textile sector is broadly divided into two components, namely the Handloom and the Mechanised sector. Several jobs such as those of Textile engineer, Production engineer, and Quality Control Supervisor, are available to graduates of the textile engineering course.
Bombay Dyeing, Mysore Silk, Lakshmi Mills and Grasim Industries are among the top recruiters for textile engineering graduates.
What does PIET offer?
The textile industry in India is undergoing a significant transformation while achieving remarkable progress and development along the way. To meet the most pressing needs of this industry, the Technical Institutions that provide Textile education bear with a great deal of responsibility in training technocrats and enabling them to give their all. In this regard, PIET's Department of Textile Engineering is making strides toward technical excellence in textile education. The institute is the only one in Haryana that offers a Bachelor of Technology in Textile Engineering under the auspices of Kurukshetra University.
Our graduates have been placed in prestigious MNCs such as Vardhman, Arvind, Trident, Nahar, Reliance, RSWM, Raymond, JCT, and Groz-Beckert, among others. A few alumni are currently employed by the Ministry of Textiles, GOI, in the Textile Committee and the Office of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts). The ‘Pradhan Mantri Paridhan Rojgar Yojna’ in the 2017 Budget has been allocated Rs. 200 crores to boost employment in the garment sector. The department has also fostered collaborations with TUL in the Czech Republic. In the recent past, selected students were sent on summer internships.
In a very short time since the institute's inception, the student representatives of its department have won numerous prizes at various national and international conferences organized by world-renowned institutes. The department is well known for its state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and highly qualified faculty.
Located in Panipat, India's textile export hub, the department has a huge opportunity to develop strong industry-institute relationships with industries in Panipat as well as other industries in the northern part of the country.
