There's a pattern that plays out in bathroom renovations across India constantly. The homeowner spends weeks choosing tiles, testing samples in different lighting, comparing finishes, debating sizes. They get to the last conversation with the contractor and the question comes up: "Which grout do you want?"
Most people say, "whatever you recommend."
The contractor says cement grout. It's what they know. It's forgiving, slow-curing, and easy to work with. The job finishes. Everyone is happy.
Eighteen months later, the grout lines are dark. There's a smell that doesn't go away. Pink staining has appeared near the nahani trap. The homeowner scrubs it, uses bleach, gets it clean, and three weeks later, it's back.
The five-minute grout decision is why.
What Nobody Tells You About Cement Grout
Standard cement grout is porous by design. Under ISO classification, it's a hydraulic binder material that sets by absorbing water. That process inherently leaves microscopic pores throughout the joint, pores that then absorb every shower's worth of soap scum, body oils, and organic matter.
In India's monsoon humidity, where bathroom conditions can exceed 85% relative humidity from June to September, cement grout never fully dries between showers. The organisms that cause discoloration, staining, and odor don't need ideal conditions. They need moisture and organic matter. Cement grout in an Indian bathroom provides both, constantly.
The pink staining near your drain is almost certainly Serratia marcescens, a water-borne bacterium that feeds on fatty acids from soap. The black lines are mold species, most commonly Cladosporium, growing not just on the surface of the grout but inside it. The musty smell is microbial volatile organic compounds, gases released by active colonies living in the joint.
Cleaning removes the surface. The root structure of the mold stays embedded in the grout.
The Tile Size Conversation Nobody Is Having
There's a second factor most buyers never consider: how much grout is actually in the room.
A bathroom tiled in 300x300mm tiles has roughly 15 to 18 linear feet of grout joint per square meter. A bathroom tiled in 600x1200mm large format vitrified tiles has 60 to 70% fewer grout joints over the same area. Every extra meter of grout joint is extra porous surface sitting permanently in a warm, wet, soap-rich environment.
The tile size decision is also a hygiene decision. Most people treat it as purely aesthetic.
What the Right Material Actually Does
Reaction Resin Grout, classified under ISO 13007-3, cures through a chemical cross-linking reaction, not water evaporation. The end result is a joint that is solid, non-porous, and chemically resistant. Water absorption is less than 0.05g per sample, compared to 3.5 to 5g for cement grout. That's not a marginal difference. Bacteria require moisture to colonize a surface. A surface that doesn't hold moisture doesn't give them that foothold.
Epoxy grout requires a skilled installation team. It's a multi-component system with a short working window, and residue not cleaned within that window hardens permanently. This is why many contractors default to cement grout. The installer's ease shouldn't be the deciding factor in a material that will be in your bathroom for 10 to 15 years.
The cost difference, with epoxy grout typically running 3 to 5 times the cost of cement grout per bag, amounts to roughly 5% added to the total bathroom project budget. Mold remediation, structural substrate damage, tile removal, and reflooring when cement grout fails costs multiples of that.
The five-minute decision at the end of the renovation conversation is worth spending more than five minutes on.
