The brief was simple: make an 1,800-square-foot apartment in Mumbai feel like a luxury property. The budget was not unlimited. And the client had one non-negotiable demand. It needed to look like real Italian Statuario marble.
The architect knew exactly what that request actually cost in natural stone. Quarried marble at that scale, with regular sealing requirements, weight load considerations, and the inherent variation of natural material, would run several times the available material budget. And even then, maintenance would be ongoing.
So instead, the team specified 800x1600mm high-gloss PGVT digital slabs, sourced directly from Morbi.
Why Digital Tiles Made Sense Here
The logic was not complicated. Digital tiles in 2026 use high-resolution industrial inkjet printing, with ceramic inks applied deep into the glaze before kiln firing. What comes out is a surface that replicates natural stone with photorealistic accuracy, the same warm grey veining, the same subtle depth, the same premium visual weight.
What it does not replicate is stone's problems. No sealing required. No staining risk. No weight concerns. And at the same scale of installation, dramatically lower material cost.
The team cut material costs by more than 60% compared to what quarried marble would have cost. That saving went directly into finishes, fixtures, and furniture, which is where clients actually live and notice quality every day.
The Part That Almost Went Wrong
Before the order was confirmed, the project team did one thing that made all the difference. They tested a loose sample tile inside the apartment itself.
The client had specific LED lighting already installed. The marble-look glaze that appeared cool and crisp in the showroom read slightly warmer under those LEDs. After testing three samples in the actual space, at morning, afternoon, and evening light, they confirmed the vein warmth was a perfect match.
That sample test took one afternoon. Skipping it could have meant an entire floor that looked different from what the client signed off on.
How the Installation Team Delivered Zero Lippage
The tile format at 800x1600mm is large enough that traditional spacers alone were not sufficient. The team used polymer-modified adhesive for a permanent chemical bond to the vitrified backing, combined with mechanical leveling clip systems to pull every adjacent slab into precise alignment.
With 2mm spacer joints and heavy-duty clips throughout, the floor cured completely flat. Not a single edge raised above its neighbor. The final epoxy grout sealed the joints, blocked moisture, and maintained the clean continuous look the design required.
After a full year of high-volume domestic foot traffic, there were zero replacements, zero lippage complaints, and zero maintenance issues beyond the routine pH-neutral mop the client had been using weekly.
What This Project Actually Proves
It is not just that digital tiles are cheaper than marble. It is that when specified correctly and installed with the right materials and technique, they perform better in practical daily life.
Natural stone requires sealing, stains if you miss a spill, and chips under impact. A high-quality vitrified digital tile absorbs less than 0.05% water, resists surface wear at PEI 4 or PEI 5 levels, and demands nothing more than a weekly mop.
The Mumbai apartment looked like a five-star lobby. The client paid a fraction of the marble cost. And a year later, the floor still does.
That is why architects keep specifying digital tiles. Not just for the aesthetics. For the reliability.
