The Mazda 2 May be a bit dated, but it's still popular with car fans. But despite that, Mazda 2, which has been on the market for seven years, will definitely need a makeover in 2021.

As we reported earlier, the Best Car Web team produced some hypothetical images of what the next generation Mazda 2 might look like. Judging from the images rendered, Mazda 2 will likely retain the same “soul-stirring” family design vocabulary as the stunning Mazda 3 Hatchback.

Even the rear of the car looks like a mini Mazda 3, which isn't a bad thing. Sure, the soon-to-be-deposed Mazda 2 May be the best-looking B-Class hatchback, but the next generation Mazda 2 pictured here is just as stunning.

The most important news, though, should be about the future of Mazda 2. As we previously reported, the next-generation Mazda 2 is likely to be based on the TNGA-B Toyota Yaris (as distinct from the Yaris in Southeast Asia) for the European market.

But according to Best Car Web, the next Mazda 2 will have an entirely new platform design, at least for the Japanese version.

As a result, the European market will get the branded TNGA Yaris, while the Mazda 2 in Japan (and hopefully Malaysia will do too) will use the new custom platform. There is little information available, but the body is said to be 1,695 mm wide, in line with the now-defunct Mazda 2.

The fuel economy of the next generation Mazda 2 will be improved thanks to a 100 kg weight reduction and a new 1.5-liter Skyactiv-X light-hybrid three-cylinder engine.

According to Japanese media reports, the next-generation Mazda 2 is expected to be available in Japan as early as around the summer of 2021. It is scheduled to make landfall in Malaysia in late 2021 or early 2022.
