That claim is not wrong in every climate. In the right conditions, with stable humidity and temperate air and no AC running eight months a year, preserved moss can sit quietly on a wall for a long time.
India is not that climate.
And yet the "zero maintenance" line gets used in showrooms across Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, and Gurugram, in cities where AC runs from March to November and where the air drops to 20% relative humidity on a dry January afternoon.
This is what buyers need to know before they sign a moss wall quote.
The Humidity Problem Nobody Mentions Up Front
Preserved moss is not alive. It's dead plant matter treated with a glycerin-salt solution that keeps it pliable and green. That preservation is fragile.
To stay intact, preserved moss needs to be held in a room at 40 to 60% relative humidity. In an AC-heavy Indian flat, ambient humidity regularly drops well below that. The moss dehydrates slowly at first, then faster, until it crumbles and sheds.
The fix is a dedicated humidifier running continuously in the same room. That's not a one-time spend. It's an electricity line item for the life of the wall.
Misting It Is the Worst Thing You Can Do
This is the part that surprises almost everyone, including the people who sell moss walls.
Preserved moss should never be misted or sprayed with water. Water dissolves the glycerin-salt matrix that holds the preservation together. The moss hardens, browns, and dies, and the damage is permanent. There is no recovery from a well-intentioned spray bottle.
Plenty of dealers still advise buyers to mist occasionally to "keep it fresh." That advice destroys the product they just sold. If any consultant recommends misting a preserved moss wall, walk away.
The Installation Has to Be Done Right or the Wall Pays for It
Glue organic moss directly onto drywall or masonry and moisture transfers into the substrate behind it. Over time, that moisture causes structural damage, including mould, plaster failure, and in timber-framed walls, rot.
A correctly installed moss wall needs a decoupled two-layer system. Marine-grade plywood as a backing layer. An acrylic backer between the plywood and the moss. This keeps the biology isolated from the building.
Most budget moss wall installations skip this. The wall looks fine for a year. The damage shows up in year two or three.
The Air Quality Claim Is a Sales Point, Not a Fact
Living plants absorb CO2 and VOCs through active photosynthesis. Preserved moss is dead and cannot photosynthesise. It does not actively clean the air.
At best it acts as a passive surface that traps dust, including PM2.5 particles, deep in its fibres where you cannot wipe them out. The air-purifying claim should be met with a simple question: "Can you show me independent testing data for this specific product in Indian climate conditions?" The answer, almost always, will clarify things quickly.
The 45-Day Wait That Kills Indian Project Timelines
