THE RISE OF DENIM JEANS

Almost every person has at some point in their life, owned a pair of denim jeans. Regardless of age, ethnicity, gender, and other multiple factors, they have been considered a clothing items. 

THE TIMELINE OF DENIM JEANS 

1800s 

The brilliant idea of creating an outfit with high wear and tear came into the mind of a businessman named Levi Strauss and tailor Jacob Davis. During the 1800s, there were a huge number of workers in the gold mining and farming industries. The jobs that required manual labor. Dungarees or overalls were introduced to be worn while doing such tasks. It was considered demeaning and inappropriate clothing for the rich class because it was associated with the working class. The jeans were on the dark-washed side, to ensure that it doesn't look dirty. 

1920s

Between the timeline of 1920 to 1930, denim were still considered as workwear. But hollywood celebrities started wearing denim as well. It was upgraded from overwalls to jeans. Levi’s started producing denim jeans, which made the clothing mainstream. 

1950s

Pop culture stars and actors in the 1950s, started wearing denim jeans. It was used as a clothing item in both reel and real life. They were used to give a cool and hipster aesthetic to the outfit. Actors like Marlon Brando and James Dean,made it popular amongst the younsters. It became a choice for women when one of the most iconic celebrities of all time, MARILYN MONROE wore it in her movie “River of no return”. It was also considered as a rebellious clothing style, when youngsters started wearing it.

Late 1950s

By this time, denim jeans took the world by storm. They became a staple for both men and women. The classic outfit of a white T-shirt and jeans, came from this time frame. The fit for the jeans that became popular in late 1950s, were boxy fit and cuffed hemline. 

1960s

By the 1960s, denim jeans went from boxy fit to flared fit. A flared fit denim jeans, is a type of jeans which is tight at the waist and flares around the knees. Different washes were also seen during this time. People experimented with different embellishments and styles as well. For instance, patchwork jeans, where different washes of the denim were sewn together. Also, embellishments like different colored stones were also attached to give a feminine look. 

1970s

Adding colors and embellishments to any clothing item makes it seem more funky. During 1970s, denim jeans were again seen as rugged clothing. Colorful patches, were added more and more. Some denim jeans for women had a hemline with frayed hems. Bell bottom jeans also became popular by this time. These were similar looking to flared denim jeans, but had a tighter waist. 

1980s

During 1980 to 1990s, a lot of denim trends came. Jeans were considered as a sexy clothing item by this time, beacuse of the tight and body hugging fit. One of the most popular embellishments, that can still be seen in jeans was also introduced. That embellishment was embroidered work on the back pockets. 

1990s 

By 1990s, denim jeans became tighter and high waisted. The flare at the bottom, was still seen. But that flare got less exgradated, and tapered fit was introduced. Different washes like acid-washed and stone-washed jeans, aslo became a thing during this time. Ripped or rugged jeans were also worn by celebrities during this 1990s. 

2000s

The iconic Paris Hilton era came at this time. She made many styles and clothing items popular among the young generation. One of them being low rise skinny jeans. Flared and loose fit were still seen, but the waist remained on the lower side.
