Titanium sponge is a porous, brittle type of titanium. Titanium sponge is created during the Kroll process of raw titanium ore, in which titanium tetrachloride interacts at high temperatures with sodium or magnesium. After the titanium sponge has been created, it is refined before being transformed into ingots.
Depending on how the method is used, different purities of titanium sponges can be generated. Iron, silicon, nitrogen, chloride, magnesium, carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen are common contaminants in sponges. Titanium sponge is used in a variety of industries, including chemical, aerospace, oil and gas, and consumer goods. Aerospace and industrial equipment are the two most important end-use industries driving the global titanium sponge market.
