The Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Mumbai and the Alcohol Rehabilitation Centre in India, came together to talk about the condition of tobacco addiction, which goes hand in hand with the alcohol addiction, amongst the addicts. Tobacco smoking, a habit which if you have is addictive and harmful in every possible way. The Drug Rehabilitation Centre in Mumbai also says that the person who smokes, the friend sitting beside, this beautiful nature and sometimes even the generation to come along suffers. This is not something people don’t know. Each year the government spends a lot of national treasure in order to make people stop smoking. But then again, if the government would just ban it, they wouldn’t have to spend so much in spreading this awareness. Yet, because of some reasons which some know some might not, tobacco is easily accessible. You need to be 18+ in order to buy a Cigarette, yet the average age of a person who starts smoking is 15.1 years.

More than 7000 chemicals are present in tobacco smoke out of which 250 are known to be harmful and among the 250, 69+ can cause cancer. From toxic metals and hazardous gases like Beryllium, Butadiene to radioactive chemical elements like Polonium-210, a normal cigarette has it all what it takes to ruin a life. Smoking is one of the leading causes of premature deaths around the world. Smoking causes death from cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung disease and many more to mention. You can imagine what all known- unknown diseases can do to 250 harmful chemicals.

It harms nearly every body organ. One of the main diseases caused by smoking is cancer. Cancers of lung, esophagus, larynx, mouth, throat, kidney, liver, bladder, pancreas, stomach, colon, and cervix are a few types of cancers caused by smoking. Men who smoke are at greater risk of erectile dysfunction. A woman who smokes during pregnancy increases the infant’s risk of death from Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. Passive smoking (involuntary smoking) kills more people than regular smoking. This fact alone is enough to establish that smoking should be eliminated completely.

Some people have framed new views that maybe cigarette smoking is harmful but smoking vapes or e-cigarettes and hookah is not harmful so they replace one addiction with another. But the only difference between them is that cigarettes have tobacco and vapes don’t. But tobacco is not the only thing causing cancer, a laundry list of above mentioned chemicals are also present in these vapes and hookah , thus making them harmful as well.

Some start because they heard somewhere that cigarettes ease your mind because of the nicotine present, the same thing which also kills you, some because they find it cool which happens mainly in the case of teenagers. Some smoke just to try once in their life yet find themselves attached with it for lifetime. The irony of the whole situation is we know we are consuming poison yet we consume it. If you stop smoking tobacco, the side effects will be impaired cognitive functioning, feeling depressed, irritated, you can have sleeping problems and headaches. But it won’t do what smoking does. It won’t kill.
