Slip masterbatches reduce a film's resistance to sliding itself or the parts of converting equipment. The common slip agents for polyolefins are long-chain fatty acid amides from oleyl through erucyl. They are effective due to their natural tendency to “bloom” to the film's surfaces after extrusion.
- The migration of slip agents usually takes time, and the CFO might not be obtained until 7-10 days after extrusion – which depends on the amide used. Usually, most CFO reductions can occur within 24-48 hours.
- Slip masterbatches must be tailored to the process and the desired end properties by the processor. In a few cases, an olamide with a quick surface is required, while a slower-blooming amide is indicated in other cases.
- High levels of slip additives can cause problems related to the surface treatment of the films and interfere with sealability and printability.
- The correct amount of slip agent should be reduced as the thickness of the film increases to maintain the COF.
